Fox

Fox jolted awake and rolled away from Marshall, heart in his throat. Panic rose to fill the place it had left behind, dragging Fox beneath its surface like a cruel riptide. Touch, sight, sound—it robbed him of everything. Nothing was meaningful where light couldn’t shine. Safety was a social construct. The darkness was out there, and it was coming for him.

A siren.

A scream.

The vile stench of burning.

Then a hand on his shoulder. Fox thrashed in its direction, ready to strike it down, and blinked back into focus a second before he wrapped his hand around Marshall’s throat. Marshall, wide-eyed, stared at him from where Fox had pinned him on the mattress. The ringing continued.

The doorbell.

It was just the doorbell.

“Fox?” Marshall asked. He cupped Fox’s cheek like he hadn’t just been in danger, his expression mellowing from surprise to concern. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah.” Technically, it wasn’t a lie—Fox’s racing heart wasn’t going to kill him even though it felt like it would. To put Marshall at ease, he combed his fingers through Marshall’s hair and kissed him sweetly. “You stay here. I’ll go get the door.”

“What time is it?”

“Fuck if I know. Just stay here, okay?” Fox rolled out of bed, tugged on his jeans from yesterday, and padded across the room. “I’ll tell them to come back later. I’m not done with you yet.”
