Chapter 10

“You plan that?” Dillon asked as he looked over at Travis.

“No,” Travis answered. “She said she wasn’t sure if you were coming.”

Dillon moved to the chair at the opposite end of the room instead of sitting on the couch. “I wasn’t sure I was coming. I didn’t want to ruin their holiday with our problems.”

“There is no problem here, Dillon. There never has been. I don’t know what you told Hunter but he seems to think I’m some kind of threat to you.”

Dillon looked at him for a moment before he answered. Travis sat like a rigid little statue; he couldn’t tell if it was a sense of haughtiness or worry that held him so still. “You’re no threat to me, you or anyone else in our family. Not anymore,” Dillon answered.

“Then why are you so mad at me?”

Dillon’s jaw tightened. “Because you’re a part of everything I want to forget and move beyond. You, your mother, my mother, and every hypocritical asshole in the town we grew up in.”

“We used to be friends,” Travis said.

“We did, but that time has passed.”

“What did I do to you?” Travis demanded suddenly, his voice going up. “I was fourteen-years-old. What more do you think I could have done?”

Dillon’s face went dead. “And how old are you now?”

“What?”

“Now, Travis, today. How old are you?” Dillon asked again.

“What the hell does my age have to do with it?”

He glared at Travis and felt his expression tighten. He didn’t want to make this a full-blown confrontation but he would if that’s what Travis really wanted. “You could have come, or called…something. It would have been nice to know you gave a shit.”

“Do you have any idea what they did to me after you left?” Travis asked. “They sent me off to Christian rehab and wouldn’t let me out until they were convinced about how much I hated you. All because you left your fucking suitcase in my room. Four months I was locked in a goddamned room by myself while they tried to brainwash me.”

Dillon wouldn’t doubt anything about his aunt and uncle. They were the people who brought his mother into the cult they called a church. He knew it was true. But four months wasn’t ten years of sucking dick to survive. “I’m sorry to hear that, but that wasn’t me.”

“And it wasn’t me who threw you out,” Travis volleyed back at him with some anger. “Do you understand how hard it was for me to have to scream at the top of my lungs how much I hated my faggot cousin, how he was going to burn in hell, all that ignorant shit? They took my cane and locked me in a room. Four months, and every single day the same questions about what we might have done together and how I felt about you.”

Dillon’s anger slipped. The tight knot he had used for so many years to keep him warm was unraveling. “I’m sorry, Travis. I didn’t even think about the suitcase.
