At least he didn’t think it was.

Emerico said to trust him, and he did. But why did he have the sinking feeling that this was bound to get a little…messy?

Interrupting his confused thoughts, Emerico yelled from over his shoulder, “We’re headed toward the river. Just a few more minutes.”

And then what?

Adam didn’t answer back. There was no point. He’d find out what was expected of him soon enough and what he needed to know to be able to live as a vampire. Plus, Emerico was probably reading his thoughts anyway.

Other than the deep purr of the motorcycle’s engine, the streets were deserted. Any intelligent human was tucked away safely in bed, dreaming, waiting for their alarm clock to rudely wake them out of their blissful slumber. Then, Adam had a fleeting thought. Maybe they wouldn’t be able to find anyone to feed from and they would have to abort the mission and go home. But he was hungry. Beyond hungry. More like famished.

Rounding a curb, they entered the Calle Don Jaime I, the street that led to the ancient Stone Bridge, the original foundation assembled by the Romans that was still intact. Adam’s swirling questions were now answered. This was Emerico’s favorite spot. He loved to stand in the center of the bridge and gaze at the rushing water below and the city beyond. Adam had read somewhere that vampires didn’t like the water, couldn’t be near it. That was not the case for Emerico, and for Adam. Adam had grown up a stone’s throw from the Gulf of Mexico, and Emerico had lived less than half a mile from the river Ebro all his life. Human or vampire, they searched out the water, respecting it, feeling its power and mesmerized by its beauty. Holy water was another story, apparently, but Adam hadn’t come in contact with the stuff since he began the process of turning, and he wasn’t in a hurry to do so.

Turning onto the bridge, Emerico slowed and then pulled to a stop. Adam jumped from the seat as Emerico parked on the pedestrian Adam Resurrected

path and shut off the engine. Throwing his long, lean legs over the bike and swiftly stalking toward the edge of the bridge, he peered toward the embankment.

Adam followed. “What are you looking for?”

“This is where the lost souls sleep. The junkies. Homeless.

Runaways. The ones no one will miss.”

Adam felt a cold shiver race up his spine. “I’m frightened and don’t think I can do this. What would my mother think?”

“Correct me if I’m wrong, but it was your mother that insisted that you drink from my veins so you could survive. Susan knew what would happen. She is a very keen and intelligent woman.”

For some reason, Emerico’s musings about his mother wasn’t quelling the anxiety that was stuck in his chest. “You’re right, but killing?”

Emerico stepped to Adam’s side, closing the distance between them and placing a firm hand on his shoulder. He gazed into his eyes.

“I will guide you through this.
