If there is ever a question about which is better as a close-quarters weapon, a gun or a martial artist, just refer to Ip Man. The answer is clear when a police officer is saying how this is the age of the gun, and martial artist Ip Man (Donnie Yen) renders said gun useless by dismantling it in seconds. Is that a bell ringing? Because that cop just got schooled by Master Ip!
In fact, there is a tremendous amount of schooling going on in Ip Man, both the teaching kind and the ass-kicking kind. Ip Man is the master of the martial art style Wing Chun, and quickly becomes known as the most skilled martial artist in Foshan after he wins a martial arts challenge against a highly skilled out-of-towner who is terrorizing the local martial arts schools. Things take a turn for the worst, though, when the Second Sino-Japanese War hits, and Ip and his family are forced into poverty under Japanese rule. Nobody can keep a good Ip Man down for long, though. After seeing several of his friends die unjustly, Ip Man gets mad! And then he gets really mad. And then the Japanese learn what it’s like to be on the receiving end of an angry Ip Man, and they don’t like him when he’s angry.
Ip Man is loosely based on the life of a real Chinese martial artist, a man who taught many renowned martial artists including the legendary Bruce Lee himself. The film is a fantastic display of what these men are capable of, with fights breaking out all throughout the film and the combatants using different martial arts styles.
Usually in an action movie, the hero gets ground down and has to rise up to overcome an opponent greater than he is, and along the way he has to struggle to do what needs to be done. Well not this time! No opponent even touches Master Ip until the end fight with Japanese General Miura (Hiroyuki Ikeuchi). Even then, General Miura only gets in a few hits before Master Ip completely obliterates him, and I mean really, he friggin’ puts that guy to shame. With hands that move like thunder and feet that strike like lightning, one thing is clear: no one touches Ip Man; he touches you! And by touch, I mean knocks flat on your ass!
