Chapter eighteen

Serena gets a Message

Serena was getting ready to go to her latest art show. Bryant was supposed to be there to help her set up. She was touching up her mascara when her phone dinged with a message.

“Phooey,” she said, reading it. Grabbing her tote bag and dropping her phone inside, she went across the hall and knocked on Storky’s door.

“Hello, what is it?” He yelled as he answered the door. “Oh, hi, Serena.”

“Hi, Bryant has a work thing, and he can’t make it to help me set up the art show.”

Storky looked at her for a minute. “And?”

“And what? I thought you would help me.”

“Fine. Where is it and what time?”

“It’s now, and it’s at the Port Metro Museum.” She said, hitching her tote bag onto her shoulder.

“The museum, really? You’ve really come up in the world.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Nothing, just, wow, your artwork’s really taking off. The museum’s an impressive venue.”

She blushed. “Yeah. It’s going really well.”

“Alright, let me get my coat. I haven’t had anything to eat yet. I just got home from school.”

“It’s fine. There’s food at the show. Bryant hired caterers.”

He grabbed his coat and keys and they went downstairs, out the back door of the building.

Crabbet watched them go. Bryant had asked him to monitor things while he was otherwise occupied this evening. Bryant seemed to think there was something fishy going on between Serena and her ex-roommate, the Crane Man. Bryant was an idiot. Serena was the only person Crabbet knew of who was completely devoted to him and not terrified of him. The only thing Crabbet could see was that she considered Crane Man her brother. He did, however, send a quick text to Bryant saying that Storky was once again with Serena.
