Estella relished the wind in her face as she rode the scooter along the mountain roads. She headed down into the valley and then back up again, around the hairpin bends towards Barga and her mother’s house. Her route took her through the main gate, where Martelli had left his car, and into the shadows, the loud, faltering note of her engine echoing off the pristine walls. By now the city appeared all but deserted, the residents having retreated indoors for an afternoon nap. She shot down a slope into the Piazza Santa Annunciata, past the ice cream shop, and uphill again towards the western quarter of the city.

A stranger was waiting outside the house. He stood with his hands in his pockets watching her arrival. Taller than average, he looked strong despite his age, which she guessed was about sixty. His short hair, once dark but now mostly grey, stuck out at the back where he’d slept on it. He hadn’t shaved and she noted that his clothes needed ironing.

Estella brought her scooter to a standstill a metre from his feet. She dismounted, hauled the machine backwards onto its stand and stood, hands on hips, staring at him.

The man took off his sunglasses to reveal eyes heavy with fatigue.

“Hello,” he said softly. “I’m Domenico Martelli and I'm trying to find Estella Ramazzotti.”
