Chapter Four
Leanne glanced over at Jake sitting on the wingback chair in her parentsâ living room. For the past half hour, heâd sat there, twiddling his thumbs, tapping his foot, and picking lint off the chair. What was up with him? If she didnât know better, sheâd say he was nervous? But why?
As if he sensed her watching him, he turned to her and smiled. All tension seemed to exit from his body as he leaned back. âSo, tomorrowâs the big day, huh? Getting cast for your new hand?â
âYes.â She couldnât suppress her grin. In a matter of weeks, her myoelectric prosthesis would be constructed and sheâd be trained to use it to its full potential. Sheâd be back in the barn doing everything she used to. âI canât wait.â
âIâll miss you tomorrow.â
And sheâd miss him. Theyâd become a team over the past few months, every day milking half the cows together. Eventually, theyâd even managed to beat her father on the other side of the barn. And then sheâd helped Jake clean the pens. She grew closer and closer to him, on the verge of crossing the line from friends to lovers. But she still worried about winding up with a broken heart, as well as her fatherâs reaction. And she never found much time to be alone with Jake anyway.
âJust think, Iâll be able to milk the girls without your help. Then we can kick my dad out of the barn and not have to worry about him popping up out of nowhere.â
Thereâd been numerous times sheâd been tucked around a corner with Jake, wanting him to kiss her and more. And as his lips met hers, her father would show up, sending them to do other chores in opposite directions. If sheâd been capable of doing more, she would have objected, but her father still owned the farm and signed her paychecks.
âSounds good.â Jake grinned.
Her father stirred beside her on the couch. âIâm right here. You could at least wait until Iâm out of the room.â
She leaned over and patted her fatherâs arm. âItâs okay, Daddy. I still love you.â
He rolled his eyes. âSo you say. Itâs like before your accident again. Youâre anxious to take over.â
Yes, all thanks to Jake convincing her she could still live her dream, at least with his help. And she couldnât think of a better person to share the responsibility with. If only she could find some time to be alone with him. Maybe if he asked her out, sheâd have an excuse to leave the property and go on a date. What was he waiting for? He barely spent any time at home anymore, except to sleep. If he did have a girlfriend, she didnât get any of his attention. But was that why heâd never asked her out?
Her mother tucked her knitting needles away and rested a hand on her fatherâs shoulder. âLetâs go to bed, Harold.â
He glanced up at her, his eyebrows drawn together. âWhat are you talking about? Itâs not even ten.
