Chapter 15

* * *

The rumble of voices stirred into her subconscious. Aubrey blinked awake. The warmth of the two suns filled the broken-down room, adding to the comfort of the steady heartbeat under her ear. By the suns’ location in the sky, it was nearly midday.

She sat up, a headache pounding behind her eyes. “Why did you let me sleep so long?”

“Exactly what I was asking,” Camren said. He leaned against the wall with his arms crossed and a frown on his face.

The bed creaked as Darion shifted beside her. “You needed the rest. Anything your mother wanted could wait. Besides, her messenger just got here.”

Camren’s shoulders hunched. “I can’t believe you left me behind.”

“It wasn’t like that,” Aubrey said. “I figured you’d want to stay with the rebels.”

“Of course. Because who else would be the errand boy for your mother?” He looked away from the bed.

“No.” She sighed. “Let’s face it. They’re the safer place at the moment.”

“So you say.” He shook his head. His eyes met hers again. It wasn’t pain reflecting there, it was worry. “I’m not sure about this, Aubrey. Myra sent me to get you, but it doesn’t feel right.”

Aubrey frowned. “She’d know whether her ability could reach as far as she needed. It’s probably bad news.”

“With your mother?” Darion scooted forward on the bed so he could stand. “I wouldn’t put it past her to attack you again.”

She hesitated, then shook her head. “I think we’re beyond that.” She could hear her mother wishing her a happy birthday, something she could never have imagined if not for the actual memory. It had been grudging, but the sentiment had been there. “We’ve been working well together.”

Darion’s blue eyes shone as his lip quirked up in a half-smile. “That right there. That’s what I like so much about you.”

She stilled at the words.

Camren frowned. He waved between them. “What? Are you a couple now?”

“No,” Aubrey said, pushing to her feet. “We were just—”

Camren held up his hand. “I don’t need details. Whatever happened here can stay between you two.”

She blushed at the implication.

Darion’s smile was wider than before. Her breath caught as she realized he didn’t seem bothered at all.

“What with Tony being someone’s baby’s daddy, I thought you might have moved on.” Camren’s words were like a splash of cold water.

“We should find the others,” Darion said. The smile had faded as if it had never been.

Aubrey opened her mouth, but Darion was moving past her and out the door.

Camren fell into step beside her as they entered the hallway.

“So, what exactly did Myra say?” Aubrey asked.

“For me to bring you to her. Including the crazy demon that can kill in moments.” He paused, but then rushed on. “I wish I’d been there. Lilith scared her. Myra didn’t say it, but she got that look on her face, you know? The one that says she’s really thinking about something.”

Aubrey let out a single nod. “I know the one.” Fear in Myra would be a new thing to see.
