Sasha lays a blanket on the grass and we sit cross-legged, facing each other.
“So, one of the first things magic users learn, is where their power is centered in the body. Different elements call from different energy centers.”
“Right. Jessops explained a lot of that. I conjured fire today!”
“Really? That’s fantastic. Good. So you already know that your energy centers here, at the top of your chest.” He places a hand on his own chest, the “v” of his thumb and index finger angled at his throat.
I mirror his movement, placing my hand over my chest, wishing I could sense my power again. “And what will you be teaching me?” I swear to god my entire body is going to burst into flames if I have to spend another second not touching this man. But judging from the way he keeps pulling back, I am beginning to think I am reading the entire situation wrong.
“I’ll, uh. I’ll be helping you with control and mind work. Before you can rely on your magical abilities, you need to learn some basic stuff. I know the kitchen witches make it look like nothing, but a lot of magic takes place up here.” He taps his temple.
I touch my collar and remember the feel of the fire energy moving through my throat.
“You won’t be able to feel the magic while you’re wearing the suppression collar, but the exercises we’ll be doing will help you when your collar is off.”
“Okay.” I drop my hand, bummed that I can’t be trusted with my magic. “Does all the magic feel different? Where is it for you?” I ask.
He places one hand over his navel. “This is water.” Then he moves it up to his forehead. “This is air.”
“You have two elements? Blake was talking about that this morning.”
“Yeah. It’s not that uncommon.”
I move my hand back onto my chest. “What does it feel like? Does water feel the same as air?”
He shakes his head. “No. The sensations are different for each element. Though, they’ve done enough research to conclude that for the most part we all experience the same kind of surge.”
“Wow. That must be something.”
“Since you’re a vox, it will be really different for you. You’ll learn to activate all the elements from here.” He points to his chest again.
“I can’t wait.”
“You called fire already, so you know what that feels like. I can show you air and water, if you like.”
“Are you kidding? Yes, please.”
“All right.” He raises his hands up, palms facing me. “Place your hands up against mine.”
I do as he says, lining my palms up with his, and pressing our hands together. My fingers only reach to the middle of his.
All right, now touch your forehead to mine.
We lean in, using our hands for balance to keep from toppling over. I inhale the mint and pine scent that will forever remind me of Sasha and try to concentrate on keeping my heart from racing.
He shifts his hands slightly and squeezes my fingers. “Okay. Close your eyes.
