Chapter forty-two

I watch Jane as she flips through the bridal magazines she brought. She has no idea what kind of dresses she likes.

„I think a beach wedding would be unique! But somehow, we’re always at the beach, so it might also be boring, right?“ The blonde girl looks at me, frustrated because she doesn’t know what she wants.

I smile at her, shaking my head, „The beach is never dull. You two share so many memories there!“

Jane nods, looking back at the magazine.

I know Nick and her are talking nonstop about the wedding. I have a day off, so she came to speak to me about the wedding.

„Yeah, no, I don’t want to get married at the beach. It should look greener and with more flowers,“ Jane finally announces.

„Okay, I am sure we’ll find the perfect place,“ I smile at her.

I grew up here and am sure I’ll know the perfect place for her. I know every beautiful spot nearby.

„So it should more be like a rustic chic style?“ I ask her, making some notes in my head, already trying to think of the perfect place for my friends.

„Yes, I would love that. The decor and stuff made off wood,“ my best friend nods. Jane tilts her head slowly as she imagines her dream wedding.

„Great,“ I nod.

Jane looks at me for a while. Her face frowns. Her blue eyes widen in shock.

„Oh damn it!“

„What?“ I ask her immediately. She seems so shocked that my heartbeat quickens as well.

„I forgot to ask you to be my maid of honor. And I haven’t asked the others to be my bridesmaids. I should surprise y’all,“ Jane doesn’t seem to notice that she totally destroyed the surprise by telling me.

„Just ask me, and it’s done. And then we’ll think about something for the others together,“ I wink at her.

„Do you want to be my maid of honor?“ Jane smiles like the Chestier Cat at me. She really is the happiest person right now.

„Of course, I’d love to!“

Jane claps her hands together in excitement. This is what we both dreamed of. She is the best friend I never had but always wished for. Jane is like a sister to me, and now she is getting married.

We always said that we'll be the maid of honor of each other.

Their engagement is distracting us from all the worry that we carry with us. We don’t think about the mission that often anymore, which is a good sign.

„You know what, I’ll call the bridal shop in town and ask for an appointment. You could have a first glimpse at everything and get into the mood,“ I tell my best friend, already reaching for my phone.

I look at their website, saving their phone number for tomorrow.

I know that Jane can’t wait to start planning. Nicholas told her they would begin planning the wedding when he returned from the mission.

He doesn’t want her to start anything before he isn’t back alive. It breaks my heart that he even has to fly the mission.
