Chapter 49

Find Dem Girls, Detective

BAPTISTE GROANED WHEN his alarm sounded. He had slept fitfully. He swung his legs over the side of the bed, and slowly rose.

Once in the bathroom, he turned on the shower and let steam fill the bathroom. He climbed into the tub and let the hot water flow over his body.

After soaping and rinsing off, he turned off the water and grabbed a towel to dry off. Once dry, he dressed in jeans, a collared polo shirt, and worn leather boots.

Baptiste stopped by the local diner, Ginny’s, for breakfast. When he walked in the door, Calvin Romero, greeted him, “Poo-yee-eii, folks dere is da man we need to talk wit. He can tell us what dis going on, mais yeah.”

Baptiste groaned inwardly. Before he could respond, however, Calvin’s wife, Bertha, responded, “Now, ya hush ole man. Let dat boy do his work.”

“Dang it woman, let me speak, ya hear. Dat poor Sadie was da light of her Daddy’s eye. Poor Diane is beside herself wit grief. Neither of dem two have stopped crying since she disappeared.” Looking over at Baptiste, “Hell, we got more girls around here missing.” Waving his hands in the air, continuing, “I’m telling y’all dose girls didn’t run away. Ain’t no way. And who here killed dat Sadie?”

Bertha chided her husband, “Calm down ya old coot. Ya going to give yeself anoder heart attack.”

Shooing his wife away, “Dangblasstic, I’m fine woman. Stop coddling me.” Taking a sip of coffee before continuing, “Besides, we all know dat Jared Watson has dem girls.”

Gasping, Bertha chided her husband once again, “Now don’t start wit dat again, ya hear. Leave dat boy be. He’s got a good heart. Ain't no way dat boy would kill anyone.”

Guffawing, “We all know dat boy ain’t right in da head. Vern and Haddie Mae tried to do right by dat boy, but dere is just no helping dat one dere.”

Baptiste looked at the man, trying to ascertain if perhaps he may know something, or was this just the town rumor mill. Interrupting he has asked, “Who is Jared Watson?”

Bertha warned her husband, “I told ya to hush. Ya opening ya mouth on business ya should stay out of.”

Calvin ignored his wife, and answered Baptiste’s question, “Jared Watson is Vern and Haddie Mae’s only son.”

Tony LeDeaux broke into the conversation, “Vern owned the local furniture store. Haddie Mae was close to 40 when she had Jared. Dem two spoiled dat child rotten.”

Calvin interrupted, “Dat dey did. Dat boy never did have to work for anything. It’s a damn shame dat he couldn’t keep his dad’s furniture store open after he died.”

Bertha stated, “Ya know he tried his best. He was heartbroken when his parents died, is all.”

Tony laughed, “Dat boy wasn’t heartbroken. We all knew he wasn’t right in the head, dat one. Always killing dose small animals.” Drinking some of his coffee, he then continued, “Some of here tink he had something to do wit dat accident too, ya hear.”

Bertha informed her husband, “Killing an animal is not da same as killing a girl.
