Laser Tag

Abby arrived at Jordan's house about fifteen minutes early. She sat in her truck unsure if she should wait until ten before knocking on her door. She didn't test very well over the week, and she was ready for some rest and relaxation. Her constant thoughts over last Saturday had crept in when she tried to study. She'd exercised more to the point of exhaustion, but she still couldn't quiet her thoughts.

Abby had texted Jordan a couple of times over the week and had tried to catch a glimpse of her at her usual hang out but each time was unsuccessful. Jordan was off the grid, and Abby couldn't concentrate through the smothering worries of losing her.

Her nerves were in a raw bundle. On shaky legs she walked to the door and hoped like Hell Jordan still planned to go on their date. Before she even knocked on the door, Jordan answered it wearing dark denim jeans and jacket, black knee-high boots, and a fitted black T-shirt. She had her hair pulled back with a simple pin. As she spun, Abby caught a view of a skull and crossbones logo on the back. On her jacket was attached a faux diamond treble clef pin.

“I like your pin.”

“I wondered if you were going to stay out in your truck or come to the door. What gives?”

“I was early and didn't know if you'd be ready.”

“Well, you should have knocked on the door to find out.”

“Alrighty then,” Abby said, pressing her lips tight. “Next time I'll just come to the door. You ready to go?"

“Hur-rah, soldier! Let's go shoot up some the laser tag!”

Abby laughed at Jordan's chiding. She instantly felt more relaxed.

Abby drove them out to the old warehouse building. The only indication it was a recreational place was the small sign above the door that said Johnson's Family Fun Center. The rest of the building was an old ugly warehouse that had dirty white paint around it's exterior.

Inside, however, it transformed into a lively arcade and game center. The lights were dimmed around the video game and bowling sections of the building. The glow of black lighting shone everywhere. Abby led Jordan through the thick crowd and upstairs.

Looking at Jordan, she said, “This whole second floor is just laser tag.” Arriving at the desk, raised her hand in greeting. “Hey, Jim. This is my friend Jordan. I wanted to teach her how to play. What's it look like in there today?”

“We've got the regulars playin' right now. You got 'bout five minutes before they start up another game. The novice side is pretty empty today. They are scheduled to go again in fifteen minutes.”

“Whatcha think, Jordan? You wanna play with us regulars, or you want to go beat up some little kids?”

“I favor the big boys myself.” Jordan smiled with a mischievous grin.

“The lady wants the big boys, Jim. Can you hook us up?”

“Right on it, Abby.” Jim handed them each a laser gun. They were fairly large gadgets, but not too heavy.
