Chapter Five
December 16
Christopher called again. I am becoming worried about this continued contact. I enjoy his company. But I’m beginning to think he has more than friendship on his mind.
I can’t deny it’s an intoxicating idea. I honestly can’t remember the last time Drew so much as looked in my direction, and here is this dashing young man, so fascinated by me. I really can’t understand it. I’m not a beautiful woman, I wasn’t even before the gray started to appear in my hair. Surely I must be reading too much into Christopher’s attentions.
And Drew… I still love Drew. How could I not? He has not changed an iota since the day we met. He stays the same, handsome and brilliant, as I grow old beside him. I know there is much on his mind lately—it seems he is distracted, his thoughts elsewhere. Honestly, I sometimes wonder if he sees me at all. When we sit down to breakfast together, I want to wave my hand between his eyes and the newspaper beside his mug of blood, just to see if he’ll notice.
The women’s magazines all tell us to spice up our marriages in some dramatic manner. Go away on a trip together. Greet him at the door wearing slinky lingerie. I laugh at this—Drew would be utterly nonplussed if I wore black lace when he came home and I know he would never spare the time away from VAMP for a holiday.
Is this the way all marriages turn out? Two people moving in endless circles around each other, like moons caught in each other’s gravitational pull, unable to come closer or pull apart. We are not married, but that is a technicality. I knew when I agreed to be his consort that I would grow old and die beside a man who will never age. I knew my heart would not change as time goes on. But I never thought his heart would fade as time went on.
I must admit, I wonder what Drew would think of Christopher’s attentions. It is a foolish, cruel thought. If I cannot stir interest and affection in him, perhaps I can stir jealousy. Fortunately, these thoughts do not go any further than my imagination.
Christopher is coming to the house day after tomorrow to bring me yet another donation. I shall make it clear to him that our relationship is at most friendship. I hope Drew will be home. It will be better if he can finally meet Drew, to see that my consort is a real man, not some abstract encumbrance.
I hope he does not take it badly.

When the precinct door slammed, a framed award fell off the wall.
Parker strode across the squad room, her rage rolling off her in tangible waves. Detective Ken Henry actually scuttled out of her way, though he and Parker regarded each other with hot contempt on the best of days. Parker was just short of running, her stride strong and furious, and even Henry kept out of her way.
