CHAPTER FOUR

It felt like it had been awhile since I’d been alone with Susan.

The feeling was good as we walked away from the house, heading north. The air was crisp, not exactly bitterly cold, the sun was shining, and the winds were down to almost nothing. It was a calm, clear day out.

For the first five or so minutes, we walked together in silence. I was keeping my eyes open. Hannah had mentioned that besides holding a watchtower, to the section of forest to the north was supposed to be a good hunting ground. And sure enough, as we walked through the woods, I saw several rabbits, some quail scurrying around, even a group of deer moving in the distance. This was going to make things easier.

Thoughts drifted through my head as we walked.

I still needed to find tape of some kind for the plastic to put over the windows. And I’d need to figure out some kind of schedule for fishing. And there was still stuff at the other house that I wanted to grab and move back over. And I still needed to search the basement of the eco center. There was at least a half-decent chance that there was some tape down there, in one of those boxes. And there was something that had been nagging me in the back of my head for several days now, something I kept meaning to do, but I’d forgotten what the fuck it was.

Now that I had some time to think about it, I knew it was a place I wanted to search. I sorted through what I knew in my mind. There was our old house, the handful of cabins scattered across the area, the eco center, that abandoned RV, the house where I’d fucked the traveling woman in, the rangers station, this watchtower we were going to...was I missing something? Fuck, I couldn’t actually remember.

Finally, I just pulled out the map as we walked and glanced over it.

Fuck! I knew I’d forgotten something! I quickly folded the map back up and put it away. Goddamnit, with everything going on, I’d completely forgotten that I’d found that other map way back when, the one that had initially led me to the abandoned RV. And there had been another structure marked on it, a farm to the east, beyond the lake. I’d made a mental note, but I’d never actually gotten around to it.

Well, definitely had to do that soon.

Something else occurred to me after a little bit. I glanced at Susan. I wondered if it was a good idea to bring it up. Then decided I was curious.

“You’ve been less...antagonist towards me recently,” I said.

She glanced over at me. “Have I?”

“Yeah. I mean, I think so. Was it cause I got shot?”

“You got grazed.” I stared at her. “No, I don’t think that’s why. I guess I’ve been...distracted.”

“Good distracted or bad?”

“Both.” I waited. “On the one hand, I’m so happy with my new relationships. With you, but also really with Lara.
