Dear James,
Or should I say, 'Dear Hastings', for to me you are both.
I have a confession to make - indeed a revelation - that will come as a great surprise to you. If you are standing, or in company, as you read these first lines, I urge you to find a secluded spot where you can be seated. Do not be alarmed: I believe that what I have to tell you will be of some comfort, and may relieve you of a burden you have lately borne.
No doubt you have glanced at the end of this letter (I deliberately gave no name or address on the back of the envelope for fear your mother would see it) and have seen that it is from Lydia Hartwell, and I hope I do not flatter myself if I assume you have not forgotten our meeting at your family's ball the Saturday before last. You mentioned to me that night that you would be returning to Wiltshire, and so I have taken the liberty of writing to you at your family's estate.
I confess that it is not without a blush of shame that I write these words: I am not solely the Lydia you met so recently. I am also the Cecil Hartwell you have known since May. My shame arises from my conduct towards you at the ball when I allowed myself to speak too freely. I acted indecorously, for which I apologise.
No doubt you have been re-reading the start of my last paragraph, and are sitting there (yes?) in a state of great puzzlement. Let me explain.
My brother Cecil, who is fourteen, has always been a very shy, mild-mannered boy who suffers from frequent chest complaints and a weak constitution. That he should attend Greystones had always been our father's great wish, having himself been a pupil there. Our mother, however, forbade it completely.
Cecil himself had been content to allow our mother's will to hold sway. In January, our cousin Jasper, whom you know, visited Hartwell Hall and regaled us with such lively tales of school life that Father's discontent about the matter of Cecil was painfully reawakened. Cecil himself could bear Father's displeasure no longer, and announced he would undertake to go to Greystones after all. Father rejoiced, and arrangements were made for Cecil to start in May.
I could see, however, that he was terrified, and I feared that his well-being would be seriously compromised if he went ahead with his declared intention. Our governess shared my concern, whilst our mother, of course, was beside herself with worry.
To distill a lengthy narrative: with the help of our Aunt Julia, and without our parents' or governess's knowledge, I disguised myself as Cecil and came to Greystones in his place, whilst Cecil himself stayed with our Aunt in London. Our parents suspect nothing.
This holiday, Cecil returned home to Essex, as if from his first term, whilst I have enjoyed a brief respite here in
