Chapter 21

Aaron rested his forearms along the top rail of the stall that housed a glossy black thoroughbred. The horse was one of twenty-five now making its home in the stables located on several acres at the back of Bushnell Downs. All but four were boarders – a vast difference from the past. In his grandfather's day, every horse belonged to Wesley K Bushnell, owner of one of the finest breeding stables in the state. Upon his death, Aaron had sold the horses to the man who'd partnered with his grandfather for more than thirty years.

Aaron loved horses; but, with his job as a Marshal, he didn't have the time or the passion to continue in the equestrian business. He kept four for his own use, just to be able to ride when he was in residence at Bushnell Downs.

He would have gone for a ride today, but the case files he'd been studying since morning had sucked up all of his time. Plus he was pretty sure some part of his anatomy would complain at the constant jostling involved in being horseback.

He'd desperately needed a break however and wanted to run some questions by his partner. Knowing that John would be finished working his own horse about now, Aaron walked the two miles to the stables.

“Hey, did you see her take that last jump? Smooth with no hesitation today,” bragged John as he walked toward Aaron holding the reins of a five-year-old warmblood.

“Sorry, I just arrived. If you come tomorrow let me know and I'll show up to give my expert advice.”

“Hah. Don't forget I've seen you ride. You're good and comfortable in the saddle – a cowboy. I'm not sure I want your input on jumping, pal.”

“You say that because I prefer my Stetson to your helmet,” said Aaron with teasing in his voice. “It's got nothing to do with clearing fences and everything to do with what you wear.”

“Churchill?”

“No, Socrates.” John grinned and ran a hand along Rose's long neck. “So what brought you out here. Did you finish all the reports?”

Aaron followed along as John cared for his mare and put away the tack. “So, are you coming to ride again tomorrow?”

“Sure. I only have another week before I have to report back to Washington, and Emily wants to swing by and see the boys on our way. She's okay with my riding a couple hours each day. That gives her time to do projects with her mom and sisters.”

“John, how closely have you delved into the reports on the shooting?” asked Aaron as the two men strolled along the stalls absently admiring the beautiful animals.

“Let's just say I'm more familiar with that case than I'd like to be,” answered John. “I still have nightmares. It's like a slide show runs through my mind, each frame worse than the last. In short, pal, it was the worst thing I've ever experienced. So to answer your question.
