Chapter 31
You keep going your way; I’ll keep going my way,
River stay away from my door.
I’ve just got a cabin, you don’t need my cabin,
River stay away from my door.
Don’t come up any higher; I’m so all alone,
Leave my bed and my fire, that’s all I own.
I aint breaking your heart, you stop breaking my heart,
River stay away from my door . . .
Song from a medley of the Brigside Singers; also sung by Frank Sinatra in the 60’s.
David felt helpless, he looks forward to being a granddad but his heart goes out to the younger of his two daughters. His recently discovered liking for Steve had quickly reverted to a former mixture of anger and resentment. Perhaps the best thing to come out of the last few months had been the increasing friendship between Madge and Tom Trencham. Apparently they were booked in to see the Black and White Minstrels Summer Show. David knew how Madge always liked to see summer shows at the Olympia theatre. She’d gone with Mary to see Frankie Howard last year. There was an increasing awareness that they might become engaged.
“She won’t need us as much if they move in together or tie the knot,” David suggested to Mary one evening after tea. “They have no constraints as both their better halves have passed away and to all intent and purposes they are both single. So now they have each other, we will be relatively free of your mother’s constraints.”
“Well they certainly wouldn’t live together without marrying, not like Dan and Mavis and even they have eventually married. No, she would never do that. And it will seem odd her being married to someone else other than Dad but it is comforting to think there is someone with her in the cottage on the cliff top. For one thing, I shouldn’t worry as much.”
“In that case, do you mind if I go to the club for a swift pint tonight?”
“They’re not living together yet,” exclaimed Mary, - but I suppose it’s okay if you’re not too long.”
When David walked into the Union Club he was surprised to find his old singing friends huddled together in a corner over pints of bitter.
“Hello David. Good to see you.” He was greeted with warmth and smiles.
“Come and sit down.” said Mick Waters. “Phil’s just been telling us a joke. Go on, tell it again Phil.”
“It’s one I heard on the beach the other day. It’s about them light, floating dinghies that kids climb into, you know, the ones that drift out to sea when the wind gets hold of them. They just seem to skim over the top of the waves. Well there was a young woman waving and shouting the other day and when the lifeboat got to her she was just about all in and had given up any thought of being saved. “Come on love,” said my mate, Jack, as he dragged her on board the lifeboat all limp and lifeless, “You’ll be all right now, you’re in good hands.
