Chapter Five

Tristan looked down at the list in his hand. He and Zach had picked up Lola Lourdes to take her to grocery shopping. She’d been quietly going from aisle to aisle for over an hour, picking out the things she needed for her planned Christmas Eve dinner, plus a few other essentials she felt were lacking in Joanna’s home.

He looked just in time to see Zach reaching up to grab a can of fruit cocktail, unable to suppress a grin. Zach had come down the stairs last night and told everyone they would have to disappoint Lola about her planned dinner. When Lolo Manny asked why—they told him about their vegetarian status. The old man had looked at them in silence before breaking out in laughter.

“Who’s going to tell her?”

Lolo Manny’s challenge stunned everyone into silence, and he burst out in more laughter before turning his back on them and ascended the stairs.

“Good luck with changing her mind. Oh, and Zach, make sure you’re early tomorrow, your lola’s not the type to wait around for too long.”

On their way back to their apartment, Zach turned to him holding up a finger.

“Don’t say anything, Tris. I know you’re gloating and looking forward to eating meat. I’ll think of something, I have to tell her we’re not going to risk your health.”

Tristan didn’t bother arguing with Zach and kept silent. Later, he’d woken up in the middle of the night, disturbed by Zach’s quiet muttering. He opened his eyes to see Zach pacing the floor, the darkness was broken by one of the nightlights Zach had insisted he installed in every room.

“Hon, what’s wrong?” he said, pulling a pillow closer. “Come back to bed, I’m cold.”

Zach didn’t say a word, but silently climbed back into bed and cuddled in close. Under the covers, Tristan felt Zach’s leg brush against his before settling them across his. Tristan smiled in the dark. Ever since that first night when they’d first gotten together, Zach loved using his legs as a pillow and now, he’d gotten accustomed to sleeping with the leg over him.

“How do I tell her, Tris?”

“Don’t worry about it, hon. Go to sleep, you’ll have your answer tomorrow.” Even as he said the words, Tris knew there was no way the woman would concede to a meatless dinner. Tradition was tradition after all. His mouth watered at the thought of Noche Buena. Ever since Joanna had come into their lives, they’d celebrated Christmas the traditional Filipino way. Once a year of breaking the self-imposed vegetarianism was surely excusable?

The next morning, Tristan woke to an empty bed. Walking out of the bathroom minutes later, Zach was still nowhere to be seen, but he could smell freshly brewed coffee. In the kitchen, he found Zach slouched over a list, a pen in his hand as he wrote down whatever was being dictated to him by whoever was talking on the phone.

Dropping a kiss on Zach’s head, Tristan ran a hand down his back before walking over to the coffee maker.
