CHAPTER SIX

Sophie hesitated before she walked over to take the phone, evading Guy's eyes, and turned away from him before she started speaking.

'Hello? This is Sophie Watson.'

The deep, resonant voice was instantly familiar, although they had only met that once. 'Hello, Sophie— this is Andreas Kirk, we met at the Blue Penguin the other night, remember?'

'Yes, of course,' she said huskily, intensely conscious of Guy right behind her, listening to every word.

There was a smile in Andreas Kirk's voice, as though her huskiness amused him. No doubt he was placing a very different construction on it, but there was nothing Sophie could do about that.

'I hope it is OK for me to ring you at work. I didn't have your home number, of course,' he murmured.

'Well, I am very busy...'

'Then I'll be quick! I won't beat around the bush, either—Sophie, I'd like to see you again; could we have dinner?'

'Oh...' Sophie let out a faint gasp of surprise, completely at a loss. 'Well, I...'

She didn't know what to say, torn between an intrigued curiosity about him, and her usual wary caution where men were concerned, especially men like him. Guy hadn't needed to warn her that Andreas Kirk had 'dangerous acquaintances'. Even if Tom hadn't told her first, Sophie's own instincts would have sent up an alarm the minute she set eyes on him.

'I think we might have a lot in common,' Andreas Kirk coaxed, but she frowned, not at all sure they would. Tom moved on the edge of the criminal world, too, because his job demanded it, but there was an open cheerfulness about Tom that protected him from the corruption he encountered. Andreas Kirk was very different. She sensed a shadow behind him, a darkness at his centre, and she didn't want to get involved with him.

'Look, Mr Kirk ' she began, and he interrupted

softly.

'Won't you call me Andreas? I've been using your first name!'

She hesitated, her flush deepening. 'Andreas, then... thank you for asking me...'

At that moment, Guy shifted position, moving round the desk so that he could see her face. Startled, Sophie found herself looking into his blue eyes. He frowned at her, shaking his head.

'Tell him no!'

She stiffened in resentment. Who did he think he was? And what made him think he could dictate to her like that? Her private life was no concern of his. Maybe he imagined that what had happened between them the other night made her his property, gave him some sort of proprietorial rights over her? Well, if that was what he thought he had a shock coming!

Andreas said in her ear, 'What about tonight, for instance?'

She almost said she wasn't free, but she wanted to defy Guy openly, to make him see he couldn't order her around. 'Tonight?' she said. On Fridays she usually went to evening school, but there wouldn't be any class meetings during the Christmas period, so tonight she would be free.

Defiantly, she outstared Guy's angry eyes.

'Yes, I'd love to have dinner tonight, Andreas,' she said.
