CHAPTER 11

Iwould like to have said that we were closer to finding Laura’s killer, but the truth was that we weren’t, and it frustrated me. These were the thoughts that ran through my mind as I measured flour into a mixing bowl and then reached for the canister of sugar. Dixie was asleep on the kitchen rug as I worked in the early morning hour.

“Hey, what are you doing?” Alec asked, coming up behind me and wrapping his arms around me. He kissed the back of my neck.

“Baking cupcakes to take to Laura’s husband and son.” I knew both Derrick and his son Jacob well enough to drop by and tell them how sorry I was for their loss, and I hoped at least one of them would be in the mood to talk.

Alec released me and went to the coffee pot. “I told you that Derrick has an alibi, and his son was out of state.”

I nodded as I grabbed a set of measuring spoons. “I know. But Derrick has to know something, doesn’t he? Somebody who was harassing Laura or something she might have said that will lead us to the killer?”

He took a travel mug from the cupboard and removed the lid. “That’s what I keep hoping, but so far, he hasn’t come up with anything helpful. Honestly, I am surprised. Usually, the spouse knows something that’s going on, even if they don’t want to admit it. But Derrick seems to be telling me the truth.”

I nodded and measured the baking powder into the bowl. “Exactly. I’m sure he knows more than he’s letting on, and I intend to get to the bottom of it.” It was how you approached the loved ones of a murder victim that made the difference. Cupcakes would help grease the wheels.

He poured coffee into the mug and then went to the refrigerator for the creamer. “Just be careful how you question him. He was pretty broken up about his wife being murdered.”

I nodded. “Of course. I don’t intend to grill anyone. At least not unless I feel like they’re the actual killers.” I gave him a wink. “I mean, if her husband is the actual killer since her son was out of town. Do you know anything new about the case?” I didn’t know if Laura’s husband had anything to do with her death, but I was going to find out.

Alec turned to look at me. “Did I tell you we got the results back from the coroner? The bullet was a 9mm and we’re going with it most likely being shot from a handgun, since that would have been easier to hide from Laura, and also if someone was driving by.”

I looked up at him. “Unless someone is going to pretend that they were trying to shoot a deer and they hit her instead. Not that they should be shooting deer this time of year, and certainly not in town.”

“No, it wasn’t a hunting accident.” He put the lid back on his travel mug and came back over to me and kissed me.
