Chapter Ten

Tiernan stared at the huge leaderboard posted just off the eighteenth green. She and Elena were actually in first place. Elena had just sunk a birdie putt and they had finished at eight under for the round, three shots in front of the second-place pairing.

“Are you okay, pal?” Brit touched Tiernan’s arm.

“We’re winning. I mean, I just wanted to play some good golf, but we’ve actually got a chance to take it all.” Even when Tiernan heard the team behind them approaching the green, she didn’t move. She’d been struggling for weeks and she felt so good to be winning again.

“Things are turning around. I don’t want to say I told you so, but—”

“But you told me so,” Tiernan said. “I never thought I could be so happy to be leading a charity pro-am.”

“Come on. Let’s go sign that scorecard.”

Tiernan followed Brit to the nearby tent, where she and Elena went inside to turn in the record of their score for the day. Tiernan watched Elena as she looked over the card before she signed. She seemed to be trying to play it cool, but Tiernan could tell she was a little in awe of her surroundings. As a member of the media, she would never have been allowed inside this tent. Tiernan smiled as Elena scrawled her name on the card, then handed it over to the league’s official scorekeeper.

“This was fun.” Elena’s smile made her eyes dance.

Fun? Tiernan couldn’t remember the last time she’d applied that label to golf. She did enjoy the game, but many years had passed since she’d played a non-competitive round. She even executed her practice rounds as if an entire tournament rode on her score. You practice as you will play. Tiernan heard her father’s voice and felt the lick of guilt against her conscience when she realized she did have fun playing with Elena.

“We’re in great shape heading into tomorrow’s round.” Tiernan glanced at the leaderboard through the gap in the tent opening.

“You sound surprised.”

“I am. A little.” The burden on Tiernan’s shoulders felt a hundred pounds lighter. “This isn’t an easy course, and it’s a strong field.”

“You’re a daunting competitor, you know. Don’t count out your intimidation factor.”

“Intimidating? Not lately.”

“Maybe not. But everyone knew you’d get it back in order. And you did today.”

Tiernan shrugged.

“What’s going on? I’ve never gotten the impression you became negative about your game even when you weren’t dominating a tournament.” Elena exited the tent and Tiernan followed.

The question was unexpected and Tiernan paused to think before she answered. “It’s been a rough few weeks.”

“But weren’t you due? At least professionally.”

“How so?”

They walked, shoulders nearly touching, along the cart path toward the parking lot where Brit and Vincent were already loading their clubs into their cars.

“You’ve had the Midas touch for quite some time. Can you really complain about a few weeks of trouble?”

“I would have thought not. But apparently Spin is getting nervous.”

“So?”

“So if they drop me, I lose a ton of money in endorsements.”

“And? Is your career over without their money? That seems a bit greedy.
