Dear Nicholas,
Thank you so much for your letter. I do look forward to getting them on a Monday. Iâm sorry Iâm a day late in replying. I had to go to London today, Monday, and only started writing on the train coming back. It was no good, though, trying to write on the train. Some people seem to be able to do it but when I try it all comes out wonky. Iâm sitting at home now in front of the fire with a glass of sherry and a piece of toast. If you were here I would cook a proper meal, of course, but I canât always be bothered when Iâm alone. I had lunch in a restaurant today so that will have to do.
By the way, I had another letter today as well as yours: from Miles and Hubert. Well, from Hubert, actually. He seems always to want to keep in touch with me, perhaps because we were at Cambridge together. Those were his best days, I think. I never told you all about Hubert and perhaps I shouldnât now, but he did always like playing the female parts in revue. Iâm not sure whether it was the dresses or whether he just liked the excuse to be, well, feminine. Anyway, he was rather well known for his preferences.
Did you know that Hubert was friendly with Guy Burgess, who ran away to Moscow? I knew Burgess slightly too. When he and Maclean defected we were all interviewed, even though it was sixteen years later. In Guyâs papers they found an invitation from Hubert to a party in 1935. I think I was there too. You never knew you had a commie sympathiser for a mum, did you?
With what the Americans are doing to Cuba I could be a commie sympathiser again. They seem to think they can control everyone, everywhere, and if they donât like a country they just think theyâll invade it.
I went up to London to talk about another television series on BBC. They have got a good part for a middle aged, middle class woman. Just at the moment, these parts are like gold: everyone is young and working class unless theyâre Edith Evans. Unfortunately Iâm middle aged now and thereâs no arguing with my middle classness. (Is that a word?) It was more than an audition today because I think Iâve already got the part, but it was a chat about how to do it. They seemed to like me, anyway. So you may have to hide behind the sofa again because your motherâs on TV. I promise not to tell anyone at school!
I had lunch with my friend Peter Dennison today. You will have to meet him some time. Iâm having dinner with him next week when I go up again for the night.
Very glad to hear about your football. You do seem to write more about football than Chaucer. I wonder why that is?! Your marks seem very good, anyway, and if you really can do your A levels in one year it would be marvellous.
