After the kitchen was cleaned up, Rosemary and Emma walked down the porch steps and headed toward the field to watch the men work on the barn.
âIâm so glad you could come today.â Rosemary found a spot under a tree and sank down in the grass, folding her legs under her.
âYa, Iâm froh I could come too.â Emma sat beside her. âI might be seeing you more often.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âMei dat likes your aenti Carolyn.â Emma picked a piece of fuzz off her apron. âIâm hoping that means theyâll be spending more time together, and we might be a family soon.â
âReally?â Rosemary studied Emma with surprise. âI had no idea.â
âYa. Your parents, Carolyn, and Ben came over for supper last week, and we had a nice time.â Emma sat up straighter. âMei dat helped me make Dutch ham loaf.â
âI was sorry I had to miss supper that night. I was babysitting for a neighbor.â Rosemary licked her lips. âI love ham loaf.â
âMaybe you can come for supper next time.â
âThat would be fun.â Rosemary thought about her aunt. âI had no idea Aenti Carolyn liked your dat.â She made a mental note to ask her aunt about that in private when she saw her again.
âYa,â she said. âIâm so froh. I would love to see mei dat marry someone nice so I can have a mamm again.â
Rosemary nodded. âYa, I bet you do. I hope that works out for you.â
âDanki.â Emma looked toward the barn. âI love watching barn raisings.â
Rosemary squinted in the sun and looked over toward where a handsome young man stood with Benjamin. She realized he was the same handsome young man sheâd spotted at the horse auction. âI love barn raisings too.â She smiled.
âWhat are you looking at?â Emma asked.
Rosemary felt her cheeks heat. âDo you see that bu over there standing by Ben?â
Emma tilted her head and gazed toward Benjamin. âThe tall one with the dark hair and the blue shirt?â
Rosemary nodded as her cheeks burned hotter. âYa, thatâs him.â
Emma tilted her head in question. âWho is he?â
âI donât know who he is, but he looks familiar.â Rosemary studied him. He looked as if he were close to twenty, and she knew her father would never approve of her dating him.
Suddenly, the young man and Benjamin began walking toward them. She swallowed a gasp and then brushed her hands down her apron, hoping she looked presentable.
âHeâs coming over here!â Emmaâs voice was a little too loud.
Rosemary resisted the temptation to put her hand over her young friendâs mouth and instead smiled as the boys approached. âHi.â She sat up straight and smoothed her dress over her legs.
âHi.â The young man smiled at Rosemary and nodded at Emma before squatting in front of them.
âRosemary and Emma,â Benjamin began, âthis is DanielâDanny. He works at Joshua Glickâs farm with me.â
âHi,â Rosemary said. âIâve heard a lot about you and the farm from Ben. He really likes working there. He was telling me about a mare thatâs almost ready to give birth.
