CHAPTER SIX
The day after her trip to the animal shelter, Kristen met with two more home security companies and hired one of them for an installation next Monday. Then she drove out of town to a furniture consignment store to buy a sofa, loveseat, and chairs for the living room, a small dining room set, and an old oak bedroom set for the main floor bedroom, all that arrived with next-day delivery.
Most everything else, sheâd ordered online, and when the new mattress set arrived this morning, sheâd heaved a deep sigh of relief. With that plus the heavy curtains sheâd purchased, surely she would finally have a good nightâs sleep. New dog beds arrived as well, for the floor next to her bed, along with minimal housewares and linens.
Grandma Tillyâs house was actually beginning to feel like home.
Far more than it needed to, for someone staying just a month or so, she reflected as she looked around. What had she been thinking, while shopping the online home goods sites for bargains? That she was actually going to stay for good? Did that even make sense?
At the end of the afternoon, Gladys Tompkins had arrived at the front door, clipboard in hand and a steely look of resolve in her eyes, but then she left an hour later with words of praise and a smile on her face.
Kristen sagged onto the new sofa after her departure, exhausted. The house was finally habitable, though now the real work could start, and just the thought made her muscles ache and her back hurt.
What had she been thinking when sheâd decided to take this project on?
A text beeped into her phone. Iâm on your doorstep. Didnât want to startle you. L.
Doorâs unlocked. Come on in. In LR, she texted back, ignoring the sudden butterflies ricocheting around in her stomach.
The front door swung open and Lane walked in, bringing with him a blast of cold air.
âHow did the inspection go?â
âGreat. Now I canât wait to bring those sweet dogs home. If I could, I would cancel my trip so I could go get them now.â
He dropped onto the loveseat. âSo where are you going next week? A family holiday?â
âTo my momâs. She doesnât know it, but my brother and I are surprising her on her sixty-fifth birthdayâthe day before Thanksgiving. As far she knows, neither of us can be home.â
âWhat a wonderful surprise.â
âIf we can pull it off. You just never know about snowstorms this time of year, and the long-range forecast is looking a little tricky for the Twin Cities.â
He glanced around the room. âI like your new furniture.â
âItâs new to me, anyhow. Iâve been in Salt Creek four whole days, and itâs nice to finally have something to sit on.â
He leaned back and crossed one boot over the opposite knee. âSo whatâs next around here?â
âHonestly, Iâm not even sure right now. Everywhere I look, I see more and more things that need to be done before my mom should even consider trying to list it.
