Chapter 10

“THEY REALLY WORE HER out,” Andrew said as he grabbed the cooler Reagan had packed for him and got ready to walk out the door.

Gladys lay sprawled on the floor, panting.

He looked a little closer. Was that drool on her face? She didn’t usually drool.

Just then she whined and scrunched up almost as though she were in pain.

“That’s odd,” he said, bending down beside her and putting his hand on her head. She barely lifted it. Usually she whined and was extremely anxious when he was about to step out. That changed a little since Reagan had moved in, but she still hated to see him leave.

“Do you think they wore her out so much that she doesn’t even care that I’m leaving?” he said softly and then looked up at Reagan who stood beside him.

The boys, after playing with Gladys for several hours, had all gone down to the basement to play video games. They even dragged Uncle Ron along and were teaching him how to play. Andrew actually wished he could stay home from work just so he could watch that.

That wasn’t the only reason he wanted to stay home from work, but seeing Uncle Ron play video games would have been very interesting. The old man was looking pretty spry after spending the morning with his friends and the afternoon sleeping soundly in front of the TV. He’d probably last as long as the boys did this evening.

Gladys whined again, and his mind went back to her.

Reagan had knelt down, awkwardly, he’d noticed. It was a little funny to watch her, but he was careful not to laugh, because he supposed that would hurt her feelings.

He certainly wouldn’t want anyone laughing at him. He definitely had packed on a good fifty pounds more than what he’d weighed back when he was rock climbing and in peak physical condition. Maybe more. He didn’t weigh himself much.

Definitely carrying that extra weight had changed his center of balance and made him less graceful and athletic.

The extra weight was unhealthy, and he should work on losing it, but he appreciated Reagan and her seemingly casual unconcern about it. Actually, she’d said she liked it, since it made him more substantial.

Would she mind if he lost it for health reasons? He almost laughed at that. Most of the time, he was worried about gaining weight and looking bad. With Reagan, it was the opposite.

She was definitely unlike anyone he’d ever met. Crazy ideas, crazy thoughts, crazy compliments. No one had ever complimented his stomach before. Not that he’d dated much since he’d gotten it.

“Andrew, I think there’s something wrong with her.” Reagan’s body hadn’t moved, other than her hand stroking Gladys’s face, but the tone of her voice sent a shaft of fear through him.

“Really wrong?” he asked, although from her tone he already knew the answer.

She was scared.

“Yes. I’m not sure, but I definitely think we need to call Violet.”

She was the one who worked at the vet clinic; she would know.
