CHAPTER 15

Scenes of a Sexual Nature

Now I was free to go to bed I didn’t feel that tired despite it feeling much later than 18:00. I opened a drawer in the desk to hide the guns away and found it was full of interesting looking bits and pieces. My eyes were immediately drawn to complicated looking watch with four hands and two sets of numbers, one went up to twenty-four, the other to ten. There were also two date windows. An Earth/Amur watch, The pawnbroker in me wondered how many there were in existence and how much it was worth.

I wound it up, set the Earth time and date and guestimated it would be about three on the 10-hour Amur clock. It seemed to work fine, even after sitting god knows how long in the desk drawer. I removed the mangy leather cover off the strap revealing an elaborate stainless steel and brass strap shaped to look like a dragon. The other stuff in the drawer seemed to date back to the 1950s or maybe, even earlier, there were several penknives of varying quality, a well-used pipe, some binoculars and two compasses, not to mention a large collection of ancient stationary.

I made a mental note to go through the stuff at another time and decided to call Debbie before James got on my case.

“Hello who’s that?”

“Hello Debs, its Xavier,”

“Xav, how are you?”

“To be honest, bloody exhausted. The times have been interesting since the funeral. Did you know James had a job for me?”

“He told me this afternoon, are you really working for him now?”

“He’d like to think so, we both have our separate areas of expertise and the job has turned out to be more involved that James or I realised.”

“I don’t even want to know what you consider your areas of expertise to be now. He says you’ve split up with your girlfriend too.”

“Yeah, she hit me so hard she broke her wrist.”

“Ouch. Does that mean you can come and comfort me? I could use some comforting.”

“Oh... ah, sorry Debs, I’ve met someone else, she sort of came with the job.”

“Damn, she worked fast.”

“You have no idea. How’s things with you?”

“Rough. The police now think Simon’s death was suspicious and they’ve been asking me all sorts of strange questions. They took all our computers and tablets, they were the only thing keeping the kids quiet. I… I gave them your name… and James’. I think they suspect Simon was involved in something before he died.” Debbie took a deep breath, “I… I miss Simon, Xav, I really do, I never loved him and could be an utter asshole but we were best friends. We all were.”

“We were.” I lied. Simon and I had never been best friends, I’d only put up with him because of Debs and James, he’d had a streak of cruelty I’d never been comfortable with.

“I wish you two had made it up.”

“Yeah. In the history of stupid arguments that must have ranked amongst the stupidest.”
