Chapter 7
Trish felt anxious all day on Wednesday knowing that the kids were due back that night. She couldnât wait to see them. Of course, time crawled. It helped when Jake showed up with lunch around noon.
âAre you antsy?â Jake smiled as he asked the question he already knew the answer to.
âYou better believe it. I canât wait to get my hands on my babies. It seems like theyâve been gone forever. Speaking of the kids, I wanted to talk to you about something.â
âSure, honey. Shoot.â
âI love it when you stay the night with me, but with the kids back, Iâm really not comfortable with that. I hope you understand.â
âSo, youâre cutting me off?â The smile made the question a joke more than an inquiry.
âNo! I mean, â¦â
âIâm just kidding, Trish. Of course, I understand. I didnât expect to spend the night with the kids home. I wouldnât be comfortable with that either. What do you want to do about letting them know about us?â
âWell, they already know you, so theyâre not likely to be bothered if you hang around. I guess weâll just play it by ear and see how they react to us spending time together.â
âHow have they reacted in the past when someone picked you up for a date?â
âDate? Theyâve never seen anyone pick me up for a date. I donât date. Well, I guess Iâm dating you, but Iâve never dated anyone else since Pete died. Youâre it. Virgin territory for them.â
âYou havenât dated for over two years?â
âNope. I had no intention of ever dating anyone again. You kind of blindsided me. I just couldnât resist or ignore you.â She reached over and kissed him.
Jake gave her a big smile. âIrresistible, huh?â
Trish smiled back. âYou were. Are.â
They both leaned across her desk for another kiss. âHey, we never christened your office, did we?â
âIâm back from lunch, Trish. Need anything?â Diana poked her head in to check in.
âNo, Di, thanks.â Trish looked at Jake. âRain check?â
âYou bet. So, I thought maybe youâd like the kids to yourself for a couple of days. What do you think about going somewhere this weekend?â
âI donât think I want to drop them off at my motherâs so soon after their return.â
âOf course not. I thought we could do something as a family, you, me, and the kids. Maybe pizza or Goony Golf? What do you think?â
Trish sat quietly. âI donât know. I really hadnât thought of all of us going out together. I donât know what I think.â
âOkay. Why donât you think about it between now and then? Weâll talk about it later. Right now, Iâve got to get back to work. Iâll see you tomorrow?â
âSure, Jake. Thanks for lunch.â Jake came around the desk and kissed her goodbye and left.
Trish had been so caught up in taking a chance with herself, she hadnât thought much about how it could affect the kids. They already loved Jake. What if he became a bigger part of their lives â someone they grew
