CHAPTER ELEVEN

BOND

A block of schools and a church was pretty much it for Tonopah. Bond was starting to think this would be a piece of cake. The warehouse was literally sitting in the middle of nowhere. He knocked on the door of what might be a caretaker’s shack next to the warehouse, but no one answered, although a beaten-up Chevy that Brick said belonged to a fellow Diné was outside.

“This is a hogan,” Brick explained after they parked behind the shack. “Look. Chickens and goats are living inside. The actual guy lives outside under this awning.”

“That’s pathetic,” said Bond. “And he’s not even here the day some burglars come to steal his iron.”

Brick said, “He probably rode out onto the range. I saw a bunch of sheep back there. Whoa. You’re actually gonna put that on?”

Bond paused, about to yank a stocking cap down over his head. “Yeah. Why not?”

“You’re seriously going to run around looking like Nicolas Cage in Raising Arizona? ‘Son, you got a panty on your head.’ Twinkletoes already took out the security cam.”

“There might be other cams inside, Einstein.” Bond yanked the cap completely over his head. He always hated this part, too, but it really worked. Wouldn’t help much if his accomplices didn’t do the same, though. “Twinkletoes, you’re coming with me. Brick and Harte, you can bring the van around once we get the iron out. Meantime, you keep an eye out, one on each corner of the warehouse.”

Brick and Harte were the two people he wanted the farthest away from him, each for different reasons. Brick, the reason was obvious. Maybe more than anyone, Bond was embarrassed that Brick had seen him attracted to another man. Bond decided he really could give a shit if other Bent Zealots thought he was gay. Maybe he was, or at least bi. He’d have to be gay in some portion of his psyche to get so turned on by the scene he’d just participated in. The idea of the same scene with all women was only mildly interesting. But being watched by a bunch of men, and especially being blown by Harte in front of those men, well. That was a fresh, new turn-on that he already knew he’d be obsessing over for months, years to come.

Maybe I am a god damned exhibitionist. Maybe I was turned bi during my bid in Florence. All that cocksucking’s enough to turn anyone gay. But then why do I like kissing that ginger? Bond tucked the chest piece of a stethoscope into his back pocket, and of course Brick had to quip,

“Okay, Doctor Blackburn.”

Bond barked, “Don’t knock it, kid. Some things never change. I’m hoping the safe has a certain kind of combination I can listen to. I scored five hundred large once with a stethoscope like this. But yeah, this is Dr. Moog’s stethoscope.”

Brick thought him a hypocrite of the worst sort, and Bond had to admit that he was. How much longer did he think he could
