“Please don’t,” Francine could barely say. “Please…please, let me go. Just let me go.”

Carson’s cold stare was fixed on her. The image of Hans flashed through his mind. All of a sudden, he heard Alyse’s voice in his head.

With shaking hands, he placed his finger on the trigger.

“Please,” Francine said again, begging for her life as tears poured down her face. She looked at the gun being pointed at her again, just a few feet away. She knew she was going to die. She closed her eyes, grasping the bag tightly against her chest.

Carson pressed the trigger several times.

Francine fell on her knees to the ground. She kept her eyes shut as she heard multiple gun shots.

After a few seconds, Francine slowly opened her eyes as Carson stood there cursing.

He had turned his gun to the side at the last second, shooting at a nearby tree.

It took Francine a few moments to slowly realize that she hadn’t been shot.

“Shit!” Carson said out loud, darting around like a crazy man. “Damn it!” He looked at Francine and went straight toward her.

“Damn you!” he cursed, looking straight at Francine’s face.

Francine couldn’t move. She was still in shock.

Filled with anger and frustration, Carson quickly grabbed her hair, forcing her to stand up.

“Leave now!” Carson shouted at her. “Go!”

Carson pushed Francine forward. Francine started to move backwards, slowly at first, still in a total state of shock.

“Go before I change my mind,” Carson said pointing the gun at her again. “Run fast and never come back. If you do, they will find out the truth and kill Hans and Alyse. If I ever see you with Hans again, I don’t care where you are, I’ll kill you myself. If you ever open your mouth about this, I’ll kill you and your family. I promise you, I will hunt you down! Now go. Get out of here and never look back.”

Francine was still holding Hans’ bag against her chest.

She looked at the gun that had been pointed at her head.

“Go!” Carson screamed out loud. “Move, damn it!”

Without hesitating any longer, she turned around and ran. The entire time she knew she could be hearing the last sound before her death.

Carson watched her enter the woods still pointing the gun at her. He knew he wouldn’t be able to look Hans in the eye ever again if he killed Francine. But he also knew Francine didn’t stand much of a chance in these woods. He was convinced that she would die one way or another.

Not by my own hands, Carson thought to himself, trying to justify what he had just done. Somehow I have fulfilled my promise. She was set free, alive.

He got in the car, spun around, and drove away fast.
