The party was similar to all the other parties he had attended in the last two years. One room with a DJ in (or wannabe DJ) mixing music (or at least trying to), while most people sat around drinking (with an occasional person on their feet gyrating in a peculiar fashion to the music). Another room with a Nintendo on, and a final room for those who liked to abuse their bodies with substances.

Yorke opted for substance abuse in the smoking room with Brandon and Cindy. They slumped in the corner of the room, sharing a small bottle of whisky. They all tried to look like hardened drinkers, but winced ridiculously every time they took a mouthful. Yorke took a large drag on a joint, held his breath, let his mind sway and shimmer, and blew out a cloud. He passed it on, smiling.

The door to the room opened and Charlotte came in holding hands with Larry.

Yorke closed his eyes. Was it the stuff he was smoking?

He opened his eyes.

No. There they were, looking for an unoccupied space to fill.

Charlotte had noticed Yorke staring up at her from the corner of the room and dropped Larry’s hand. Larry didn’t look bothered. Mind you, he never really looked bothered about anything.

‘Shit, man,’ Brandon said, with his usual lack of discretion, ‘Charlotte and X-file? What the—’

He didn’t get to the last word. Cindy had already pulled Brandon back by his shoulder. ‘Stay out of it,’ she hissed.

Charlotte waved and mouthed ‘hello’ to him before finding an unoccupied part of the room to sit with Larry.

‘Let’s go,’ Yorke said.

‘You can’t be serious, Mike. Think about this. Would that look cool?’

‘I couldn’t give a fuck. Now.’

However, as he was about to get to his feet, he experienced a sudden rush of marijuana, and instead, closed his eyes and leaned back against the wall.

He took several deep breaths, trying to stabilise himself. Life had dealt some low blows, but this? Charlotte dating X-file?

With his eyes still closed, he took another swig of whisky, but this made his head spin even more, and before he knew it, a hot wave of nausea swept over him ...

... And he was back in that room again. The room with the sickly-sweet smell and Frank’s body. But now the insects had joined the party. They patterned the hole torn in his stomach making it look like a huge, quivering smile.

Bigger insects were bloating themselves on the chopped organs on the floor. He turned and watched the pale figure slither from the shadows again.

Brandon’s damp hair hung over his face; he brushed it aside with a blood-soaked hand revealing hollow eyes. He poised for a moment, showing the bloody knife to Yorke and then he struck …

… Yorke bolted upright and vomited on the floor. There was a collective gasp from around the room as he continued to retch. He felt a hand on his shoulder and glanced behind to see Brandon’s concerned face.

‘Get your fucking hand off me,’ he said, in between mouthfuls of vomit.
