Chapter 8
When a fly started buzzing my ear, I awoke in annoyance. I saw that my nephew was just pulling up in a flatbed wagon in front of the house. The sound of the wagon and horses jarred Constance and the cats awake. I waved at Amos.
âWhatâs with the wagon, Amos,â I said.
âI got it down at the livery stable. I thought we would need it for all of us to go to the river tomorrow for our picnic. It should hold all of us and everything we need to take.â
âYou hear that Constance? Tomorrow we get a day in the country and a picnic by the river.â Constance let out a two-fingered whistle, and we both clapped our hands like little kids.
Amos chuckled at our response, and he shook his head in amusement. âI thought that would make you two happy. Did you ladies have an enjoyable time in town today?â Constance elbowed me and I ignored her. I was glad Amos had not seen her do that. I frowned at her, and I held my finger to my lips reminding her to be quiet about todayâs strange events.
âYes indeed,â I answered loudly. âConstance even found herself the perfect hat, and she looks beautiful in it. We also did some other shopping and had a pleasurable lunch too. We both purchased some sweets at the general store for you and the girls. Nothing exciting happened at all, just a nice stroll about town.â
Amos nodded in reply, as he fussed with the horses. âI suspect those girls have supper just about done by now. You ladies head on in and see whatâs cookinâ. I am going to put the wagon and horses in the barn, and then I will be in myself.â
âAlrighty then,â I replied. Lord knows I shouldnât miss a meal. I wouldnât want to go getting too thin and scrawny now,â I said while patting my more than ample hips. The screen door banged shut after we went inside, leaving the two cats sitting and staring, looking as if they were expecting an invitation to go inside too.
Dinner that evening was a delight to the senses, the ears, and the heart. Amos filled us in on his new project for the university. He would be on a team of architects to build a new library. This announcement got a round of applause from the whole group. Grace talked of her graduation on Friday. She seemed thrilled to start her career as a nurse. She had already inquired into possible work upon graduation. I knew her caring nature and diligence would make her good at her profession. Lila spoke of her desire to create a local museum of natural history, which was something I had no idea she had even thought about. As I sat and listened to their accomplishments and desires, I could not have felt more pride than if they had all been my children. Amos had worked so hard in his education and career. He had made sure his girls were educated too, and now the girls were blossoming.
