HE FINISHED his lunch and walked with Sandy back to the wards. Wes returned to work, but not before checking on René, who seemed almost in a perpetual state of excitement. As the day wore on, Wes stopped by where René was working and sent him home. “I found some books for you to read,” Wes told him. “You don’t need to work all the time.”
“You sure? I not tired,” René said.
“Yes, I’m sure. There’s more to life than just work. And be careful on your way,” he said before stopping himself. Jesus, he sounded like his mother. René put things away and then left.
“How long you be?”
“Not long,” Wes said and motioned for him to go. Then he got back to work.
At the end of the day, Wes stopped by the cafeteria and got some meals to go before walking to the room he shared with René. He opened the door and stepped into the cool interior. “I getting used to cold,” René said, and Wes smiled, because if René thought mild air-conditioning was cold, he was in for quite a surprise during a Maryland winter.
René returned to reading one of the books Wes had managed to scare up. They were middle grade books, but Wes wasn’t sure about René’s English reading skills and figured they could start with something easy and work up from there. René certainly seemed to be reading well, and Wes figured it wouldn’t be long before he had to try to scavenge other material. “I brought dinner,” Wes said, and René put his book aside and came to the tiny table. There was just enough room for the two of them. Wes had had to locate another chair, but at least he and René could eat dinner together.
Wes set out the plates, and René dug in like any teenager who hadn’t eaten in three whole hours. “Is Anthony back?” René asked between hurried bites. He always ate every meal as though it might be his last. A few times Wes had thought to correct him, but didn’t. He hoped with time that René would become more secure. But maybe that wouldn’t happen until René was away from here. Wes wasn’t sure. He only knew he wanted René happy, healthy, and as secure as possible.
“No,” Wes answered. It was a familiar question, and the conversation usually ended there. But not tonight.
“Is he your boyfriend or just someone to boom-boom with?” René asked, and Wes nearly choked on his food.
“Okay. First thing, I know what you had to do to survive, but my sex life and who I spend time with intimately isn’t a topic of conversation, especially around the dinner table. When you get older and meet someone you’re interested in, you aren’t going to want me asking you for details. And second, I’m not sure what he is right now.”
“What do you want him to be?” René asked, and Wes could not believe he was having this conversation with a teenager. But René was
