FIFTEEN

MILLS

I stumbled after Fry from the office and she let go of my elbow as we hurried down the stairs, and out into the carpark, where we piled into her car again. I fumbled with my seatbelt as she turned the car around, left the carpark, and joined the traffic on the roads. The cars stretched along, moving slowly and I pulled my phone out to check the traffic reports.

“There’s a lane closure on the A64. It must be clogging up the roads,” I told her. Fry grumbled, her grip tightening on the steering wheel. “Take a left up here,” I directed her. “I know another way.”

It was a long, winding way that took us down several backroads with some rather severe potholes, and along stretches of residential streets, but soon enough, we turned around the corner to the hospital, which was just down the road. I sat back with satisfaction, and Fry smiled at me.

“That’s a relief. I’m still learning all the shortcuts. I feel like I’ll never catch up though.”

“With me? Not likely, but I have lived here all my life. There’s a space there.” I pointed ahead to where a car was just pulling out. Fry waited behind them and then quickly spun the car into the vacant space with a quiet cheer.

“Why is there a lane closure?” she asked as we left the car.

“Road maintenance or something,” I guessed with a shrug.

“There’s always sodding road maintenance,” she muttered, rushing to catch up with me as I strode towards the hospital. Rania Arkour would have been contacted by now, Delilah too, I imagined, and I wanted to see Abasi before either of them arrived.

We headed straight to the ward, hurrying along the wide corridors with our shoes clicking on the shiny, polished ground as we breathed in the clean, chemical, smell of the hospital.

“My grandma used to work in a hospital,” Fry said after we took a wrong turn and had to come back the way we came. “She knew every nook and cranny of that building.”

“What did she do?”

“She was a midwife. I used to want to be one as well, until I learnt a bit more about childbirth.”

“Not so keen after that?” I asked. I’d been in the hospital with Elijah and Carrie when their eldest was born, though of course not in the room, and it did seem to be a rather intense job for a midwife to have.

“A bit gory, really. A miracle and all that, but a bit gory too.”

I smiled sideways at her. “And being a police officer is such a fresh walk in the park?” We’d seen some gory things in our time, none of which could ever be called a miracle of life.

“At least we’re never up to our elbows in placenta.”

I grimaced. “Thankfully. Here.”

I turned around the right corner this time, and we strode to Abasi’s room. The door was opened, and I peered in to find Abasi sitting up in bed, the doctor talking to him quietly.

I knocked on the doorframe, and the doctor turned around with a polite smile.
