Chapter Twenty-Six
When passing the Civic Square and the Municipal Buildings, on his way to his apartment, Orion noticed Jacostaâs office light was still on, even though it was eight in the evening. In the hope of her being able to help him solve the puzzle of the Earth childâs whereabouts, he called in.
She glanced up when he entered the room. âYou look happy! Have you won at fencing again?â
He came over and sat opposite her desk. Her smile disappeared upon noticing his tousled hair and grubby shirt underneath a creased tunic. The topaz pin, which he always wore at the tunicâs neck, was also partially unfastened.
He followed her gaze downwards. âPlease forgive my appearance,â he said. âIâve just come back through the Barrier and thereâs been no time to freshen up.â
Alarm shot into Jacostaâs mind, which in turn called for adrenaline to rush into her heart. She fought to keep her breathing even. âYouâ¦.youâve been with the Earth Seer?â
âYes, weâve spent all day looking for the Earth child, but we couldnât find her. I canât understand it. Iâve searched everywhere, even the two empty flats and Elizabeth even got the Earth Police to search the block of flats again, but still nothing.
She looked at his handsome profile when he turned away in thought. The easy way in which he now used the Earth Seerâs name and his appearance said so much; more that she really wanted to know.
He had no idea of her suspicion.
She got up and looked out of her window at the floodlit fountain. âAs it happens, an hour before you arrived, Dorta sent word that one of her Detectors has picked up that the childâs being kept in a small, confined space.â
He turned back to her. âBut is she still in the same block of flats.â
âOh yes. That hasnât changed.â
âThen Iâm completely in the dark.â
She wanted to scream out, thatâs because you and thatâ¦.Earth womanâ¦.have been exploring each other, rather than using more lateral methods to uncover the Earth childâs whereabouts!
But, she pulled herself together, determined not to demean herself with jealousy. âI think the childâs more in the dark than you, given where sheâs been put.â She pulled up a chair and sat beside him. âWhat is it, Orion? Has this last trip to the Earth world got you brain-addled?â
A look of realisation appeared on his face. âA cupboard? You mean, the child must be in a small, dark cupboard?â
âI canât think of any other confined space, given that you andâ¦.she have made such a thorough search of everywhere else today.â
He thought again for a moment. âA cupboard? Then Iâll have to go back and search all the cupboards. Though, itâs going to be difficult to rifle through every cupboard, in the entire building! Even if Iâm invisible, the flat owners would either have a fit, or die of fright when seeing their belongings moved about by, what theyâd perceive as an unknown force. But I suppose, I could wait until theyâre out at work or shoppingâ¦.
