Waking up was a hell of a lot harder than falling asleep had been. Christian felt as if he was dragging his consciousness through sticky black treacle. His eyelids weighed at least twenty pounds. Each. He had the strange impression that he was at sea, the rise and fall of the waves lifting his body then dropping it. The sensation was slightly nauseating.
“Wake up, wake up, wake up!”
“Wha…” Christian opened his eyes to discover that his sailing partner was Olly, who was bouncing up and down on the edge of the mattress. Olly couldn’t have looked more bright-eyed and bushy-tailed if he’d been dressed in a squirrel costume and sprayed with glitter. All Christian could manage was a groan.
Olly bounced some more. “Get your lazy arse out of bed, Christian, Becket’s coming home today and we have to have breakfast and turn you back into a human being before he gets here. Breakfast first, though. I need energy if I’m going to tackle your appalling self-image issues and the staff restaurant here serves the most amazing waffles with syrup and syrup doesn’t count as sugar does it so Joe won’t stop me from having a few especially if I hide the syrup under some blueberries and they count as one of my five a day at least which is great because they’re almost like sweets!”
Christian decided that he’d entered some kind of alternate dimension where his capacity to understand the English language had been severely curtailed. Olly talked without punctuation and it was challenging to the ears. He tried what he hoped was a pitiful moan, hoping to elicit some sympathy from his tormentor, but it didn’t work. Olly tried to yank back the covers.
“Olly! I don’t have anything on!” Christian suddenly felt a lot more awake.
“Oh don’t tell me you’re all coy and shy? Just like Aiden—he gets all bashful too, which is hysterical. If I had a body like his I’d be parading around in a thong, not hiding all those muscles away.”
Christian held tight to the covers. “I can’t imagine Heath letting Aiden parade around anywhere, and I’m pretty sure that Joe prefers to keep you under wraps as well.”
Olly pouted. “That’s not the point. I know you have a hot bod under there. You move like a dancer and I’ve seen you in those leather trousers Carey makes you wear at the club. They don’t leave very much to the imagination, and believe me—I have a very active one of those.”
Christian risked sitting up and took a proper look at Olly. He was wearing the black fleece and cargoes that made up the staff uniform at The Edge, but the corporate effect was ruined by a pair of sparkly pink baseball boots.
“Why aren’t you working? Shouldn’t you be looking after Becket?” Christian felt a bit panicky.
“I only work part-time at the hospital and I’ve taken a few days off to look after Becket here. I’ve left the lovely Becket in good hands—he is rather a dish, isn’t he? Though a complete wimp.
