Janelle had flown a lot. She'd been raised as an Air Force brat, and she'd been inside planes and helicopters that most people only see at air shows. She'd crossed the U.S. plenty of times, going here or there to go to school, visit her family, to relocate. But she'd never flown first class before. She and John sat in comfort as they flew from New York to Houston, being served delicious food and drinks, relaxing in the huge, soft chairs. They sat holding hands, with John tossing ideas around about new careers. John had been thinking out loud to her a lot over the last week, trying to figure out what he wanted to do with the rest of his life, if he could find a way to wiggle out from under his father.

"Are you scared of him?" she asked.

"Not scared," he said. "He has a certain aura, I'll admit that. He's persuasive, and very commanding. And he tends to speak in absolutes that imply a certain finality in any decision he would like to dissuade you from choosing. So I wouldn't necessarily say I'm scared of him. Intimidated, maybe. Sometimes."

Janelle shrugged. "He sounds like an asshole."

"He's a dad. And a CEO. And he doesn't seem to separate the roles very much."

"Any idea how he's going to deal with you showing up with a pregnant black girl on your arm?"

John took a deep breath. "No. I have no idea."

They arrived in Houston and took a limo to a shining glass office tower in the heart of the city. Like John told her, he almost never met his father except in a business setting. Even now, to discuss very personal issues, they were going to meet his dad, James Alexander Martindale, at his office. They went inside the building, signed in with security, and then rode an elevator up forty stories.

"My ears just popped," Janelle said, as the high-speed elevator kept going up and up and up.

"Mine too," he said, yawning to try and equalize the pressure in his inner ear. "It's like entering another layer of the atmosphere when you go up in some of these things."

They finally arrived at the fortieth floor and stepped out into a broad corridor with wide glass doors at either end. John led Janelle to one set of doors, opening it to admit her into the waiting room outside his father's office.

Behind a huge, high-gloss desk was a beautiful blonde woman, probably in her late forties. She looked like she'd become an office worker after retiring from a modeling career.

"Hi, Johnny," she said with a bright smile as they approached her desk.

"Hello, Brianna," John said. "This is Janelle. Is Dad free now?"

"Hi, Janelle," Brianna said, flashing a dazzling smile. "Let me check." She picked up the receiver of the phone in front of her and hit a button.

"He's your dad," Janelle said to John. "Can't you just walk in?"

"Ha! He's not like that."

Brianna smiled and hung up the phone. "Go on in, Johnny. Nice meeting you, Janelle.
