CHAPTER 13

Oxford

April, 1965

Donna stood gazing at herself in the mirror for a long moment, then pirouetted gaily. It hardly showed; no one could possibly guess yet. The baby could grow silently behind her strong, young stomach muscles for a while longer.

Alexander would come round, she was sure. Admittedly, he had been very angry when she’d first told him, but then, much as she loved him, she had to admit he was a strange person: remote, cold even, at times. But to have taken her to his bed (and for Donna, with her strict Spanish upbringing that had been a momentous event) must mean that he surely loved her. Obviously, with his English reserve, he found it hard to speak the words of love, but his passion spoke more loudly than any words could.

Donna smiled at her reflection. I’ll be a model yet, she told herself. Not for nothing did her friends admire her beautiful body. ‘You could be another Christine Keeler and bring down the government’ they laughed. But no Profumo for her – Alexander was all she wanted. And for him, she would put off her life of stardom for a year or so. She’d carry on working in that awful café for a while yet, or at least until the baby prevented her from doing so.

He would want the baby, she reassured herself. Of course he would. Fancy mentioning that dreadful word: abortion. As if Donna would even consider the thought. No, it had just been the shock that was all. She was sure that he’d always love her, and he’d love the baby too when he saw it. And then he would become a famous scientist and she would become a famous model. She patted her stomach, speaking silently to the unborn baby. And you, my darling, will be proud of your accomplished parents.

The year was 1965 and the month was April. Harold Wilson had been prime minster for about six months, and Alexsei Leonov had recently become the first man to walk in space. But these matters did not concern Donna, for her thoughts were firmly turned inwards. She had Alexander: her mentor, her beloved. She would have walked to the stars for him.

And now she bore his baby. Not for Donna, with her strict Catholic upbringing, to have any thoughts of contraception, and not for Donna to really consider sex before marriage. But she had for Alexander! She loved him and he must love her, which made everything all right. Surely, now that the baby was conceived, Alexander would marry her? Of course he would. They would wait until the baby was born, and then she would stun them all as she floated down the aisle. She would be the most beautiful bride that anyone had ever seen, and Alexander would forget that Russian girl.

Donna frowned. She hadn’t meant to let the memory of that girl get into her mind. She hadn’t even met her, but she knew that Alexander had had a long love
