CHAPTER 25

“It’s not what it looks like, I swear!” Ayer stammered. Scrambling for the door to Nadine’s cabin, he slammed it shut and spun to rest his back on it. He tried to whistle a leisurely tune but that was something he couldn’t even do while relaxed, so instead he made wet blowing sounds for a few seconds before giving up and clearing his voice.

“Odd, normally Nadine locks her door when—”

“Y-y-yeah, it was locked. But then you came outta nowhere and scared me half to death. Makin' me jump so hard I nearly went through the damn thing. You gotta stop sneaking up on people.” Ayer yammered, praying to every god he had ever heard of that Samson was as dumb as he looked.

“Ha, I’ve never been told I’m hard to notice before.” Samson mumbled, looking down at his overgrown muscles and long legs. “Actually, it’s usually the opposite.”

“Yeah, well, I have bad… hearing?” Ayer’s voice involuntarily raised an octave as he finished the sentence.

“Huh…” looking Ayer over with quizzical eyes, Samson stroked at his wiry stubble. “You’re an odd guy, has anybody ever told you that?”

“Yeah.” Ayer’s shoulders sank. “Pretty much everybody I’ve ever met has told me that. One time an old lady I never even talked to before stopped me on the street to tell me that.” Taking in a sharp breath, he breathed out the painful memories with a hiss.

“Anywho… Nadine’s out for the night helpin' the old skunk in town. But if ya need company, I’ve actually been meanin' to talk to ya.” With a skeptical tinge to his face, Samson breezed past Ayer’s reason for being there to invite the man he nearly chopped in two earlier that day out for a conversation. “Come on, little guy. Let’s go talk.”

Staring up at the mountain of a man’s broad toothy smile, Ayer got the foreboding sense he was about to be taken out for the bad kind of dinner; the kind where he was the main course.

“Oh-kay.” Ayer’s voice cracked. “Let’s go…” Taking several shaky steps past Samson, Ayer fought the urge to run. It wouldn’t have done him much good anyway. With Samson’s increased strength and size, he’d catch him in a second and then probably make his death more painful.

“Wait a sec.” Samson groped around in the pockets of his tan leather pants and after pulling a large brass key free from them, shoved it into Nadine’s door, locking it with a heavy turn. “There we go, all good and locked up.” He slipped the key back into his pocket. “I gotta look out for my people, ya know?”

With Nadine’s cabin safety locked back up, Samson took the lead, beckoning for Ayer to follow him as he walked away from the cabins built for the Earthers and then the village altogether, walking in silence the entire time.

Ayer followed after Samson at a mostly safe distance, given Samson wasn’t carrying any weapons. Though, he suspected if Samson really wanted to, it would’ve only taken a single step of his long legs to clear the distance between them.
