CHAPTER SEVEN

ABBY stared at Jordan. ‘I’ve no idea what you mean,’ she said lightly. There was no way she wanted to tell him that she had panicked and tried to escape from someone who might or might not have been following her. He would think that her imagination had been working overtime, and she felt foolish enough as it was.

She walked towards the main entrance of the hospital, in a hurry to get outside and make her phone call. The glass doors swished open and she went out onto the paved area, heading for the relative sanctuary of the landscaped courtyard where there were bench seats and at least a modicum of privacy.

Jordan kept pace with her, his long strides more than a match for hers. ‘I think you know very well what I’m talking about. You almost crashed your car this morning and you haven’t said a word about it to anybody.’

‘I didn’t almost crash my car,’ she said in a withering tone. ‘I pulled up in a lay-by so that I could get some fresh air and I didn’t notice that somebody had emptied a load of rubbish onto the tarmac. Perhaps someone had to make a few quick repairs to their vehicle and didn’t bother about the mess they were making when they emptied their toolbox. Anyway, however it came about, I was just unfortunate, and now I have to go and change a tyre. It’s no big deal, but the sooner you leave me to get on with it, the better.’

‘That’s not how Simon told it.’

She raised her brows. ‘Simon was ill, if you remember. How on earth could he know very much about what was going on around him?’

‘He was observant enough to notice that you looked as though you were in trouble,’ Jordan said crisply. ‘I’m not letting you slide out of this one, Abby. I want to know what’s going on, and I’m not going to let it rest until you tell me.’

‘Look, this is a waste of time,’ Abby retorted. ‘I have to get back home and collect Chloe. I wasn’t in trouble. I had a puncture—that’s the long and the short of it. And now I need to go and sort it out.’

‘Then that’s what we’ll do,’ he said evenly. ‘I’ll give you a lift and we’ll go and pick up your car. I don’t see how even you can make any objection to that.’

A protest was already forming on her lips, but he glowered at her and placed a hand in the small of her back, urging her towards the car park. ‘Come on. You were the one who said we were wasting time.’

He was right, of course. There wasn’t any reasonable way she could object to him giving her a lift. She just hoped that he wouldn’t keep wearing away at the question of what had gone on this morning. She had given him a perfectly simple explanation for what had happened, and he would have to make do with it.
