A Cold Retreat

Chapter 34 – Sasha

A t one point, I nodded off. I suddenly woke myself up with a start. I think my head had suddenly flopped over to the side. I gritted my teeth, determined this would not happen again.

Hours must’ve passed. I started off in an almost meditative state. I may’ve even slept with my eyes open.

And then the door clicked open.

He came in slowly, tentatively, like he expected me to be hidden behind the door with an axe ready to behead him at the first opportunity.

“You’ve put some clothes on?” he said, a tinge of disappointment creeping in.

I smiled and tried to remain calm even though the adrenaline was pulsating through my body.

I stood as expected and then suddenly turned and threw the whole of my weight at him. He stumbled backwards unexpectedly, and I jumped and clawed at his eyes. He covered up, and I fell on top of him, my knees coming down with all of the force that I could muster onto his crotch.

I expected him to buck and throw me off like he was some UFC cage fighter, but instead, he howled and covered himself. I was left with a choice: fight or flight.

I wasn’t going to run anywhere. I saw the weak spot in him. Whilst he’d thought I might try something, in thinking I was submissive and compliant, he’d let his guard down. I’d timed the attack perfectly. Was it luck? Maybe. But I’d been left in a room with only my thoughts to imagine a way to get out of this. I’d played out as many scenarios as I could, and really, as long as no gas was pumped into the room and Leonard came alone, there was a good chance this would work. Yes, the probability and risks of failure were still too great, but to hatch the perfect plan would’ve been hard.

I punched him once and then twice in the face through his hands. I was possessed, swinging wildly at him.

But then suddenly what must’ve been an elbow caught me in the nose, sending a flash of pain through me, and my eyes watered. It was enough to lose my momentum. As a natural response, my hands flew up to my face. Suddenly I was falling sideways. I crashed down on my shoulder and felt his weight move on top of me. I clawed my fingers again in desperation, using all the knowledge I had researched for self-defence. As with everything in life, understanding the theory was one thing, but putting it into practise was another. Like with cage-fighters, when it came to grappling, it was essentially a physical game of chess―second guessing your opponent, getting them into a position that they could not get out of. Every single placement of a hand, arm, or leg completely changed the game plan. Hundreds of scenarios practised in slow motion, and then reactively at normal speed in the gym. And now I was following instructions only ever practised on a submissive instructor in a self-defence class I’d taken a few years back.
