RECRUITS AND RIDDLES

Max turned to find that Arinna had now been rooted in place by layers of the thick snot-like substance. The lanky demon was being cautious in her final approach which gave Max the time he needed to cast Stagnation on her too. It took four casts to make the thin demon finally drop but that was fine. Every time Max cast the spell, the sludge he was standing in filled his magic right back up.

Something tapped his shoulder. It was the mushroom guy. He had three more friends behind him, one had a pike but the others had apparently stolen some weapons from dispatched demons.

The one that had helped Max pointed at Lo Granath.

“You want to handle him?” Max said. “Be my guest.”

“Uhh... Ugnh...” the demon groaned, maybe trying to argue for his continued existence.

At first the mushrooms stabbed the demon relentlessly, but it wasn't long before their caps opened to reveal rows of serrated teeth that they used to rip chunks from his flesh.

Max couldn't help but wince at the sight of it. “The world where the mushrooms eat you,” he said as he sloshed his way over to Arinna. She was still pinned completely by layers of thick mucus with both arms stuck to her sides.

“Thanks for taking the time to drop by,” she grumbled.

Max chuckled. “Somebody sounds a little salty.” He pointed back behind him. “I could go back if you want.”

Her eyes widened and her nostrils flared. “Just get me out of this!”

Max put a hand to his bony chin. “I'm actually not sure how,” he said. At home if your nose and throat were full of mucus you'd like gargle with salt water, right?

“Whatever you do,” Arinna said. “Do it quickly. Sleep won't work on demons for very long. It rarely works at all. I don't know how you-”

“It's not sleep,” Max said as he grabbed her by the shoulders and dunked her down into the black slush, giving her a good shake. From what he remembered, blood was basically salty water. It should help some. If not, the only other solvent he could think of was alcohol, but was there any of that here in the underworld? He had no idea.

Arinna emerged from the slush sputtering as she spit black blood from her mouth. “Ugh! Tell me when you're gonna do tha–”

He dunked her again, shaking her a second time. Then he brought her up.

“MAX!” she growled through her pointed teeth.

“Any looser?” he asked her.

She frowned, thinking. “A little.”

He dunked her a third time, shaking her again until he felt the gook release. Arinna's arms came free and she pushed herself up from the rancid filth.

“I'll get you for that!” she snapped at him.

“For what?” he asked. “Freeing you from the mess you got yourself in?”

The mushroom men had arrived again. This time they were pointing at the other immobilized demon.

“She's all yours,” Max said. “I hope she's delicious.”

“Those myconoids are on our side?” Arinna asked, now thankfully distracted from her desire to murder Max.
