Chapter Fifteen

With a smile Brittany looked over to Samuel as they rode down the drive to the Sexton mansion. For the past two days, together they had been riding out talking with the tenants to alert them of possible strangers in the area. When they returned in the afternoon they would review several of the books on Africa she'd brought from London. It was then she noticed a pattern which she brought to his attention.

"M' lord, do you believe my godmother and Lord Wallace will arrive today?"

"If everything goes as planned I can't think why not. Also, I wonder when someone is going to another attempt on the book? That has me concerned ,too."

That had weighed on her mind ever since they'd arrived. Of the tenants they'd spoken with and gleaned from the staff who lived in or around town no strangers had arrived since they had. Was it possible, she started to wonder, that this person might not be aware the book was en route? Brittany's expression must have given her thought away.

"My dear, they must be aware the tome is here. The only thing I can think of is that they need to set events in place to relieve you of it. Before you ask, I've no idea what they could be. We've done everything possible to ensure its safety," Samuel said as he leaned over and patting her on the hand.

It was then she had an idea, but wasn't sure it would work. If a second copy was set out where a thief might easily steal it, theirs would be safe. Her only question, where might they obtain another without having to return to London? The closest large town which would have a store that might sell one, was about three hours from here. How though—better still, who—could they trust to make the trip?

"M' lord, I might have a suggestion on how to protect our copy when it arrives, but I wish to discuss this plan with my parents," she told him then tapped her heel against Patti's side, sending the mare into a comfortable canter.

The sound of horses' hooves catching up brought a smile to her lips. As they raced up the drive they didn't slow until they came to the courtyard and they together slowed to a walk. That was when she saw not one but two large travelling carriages. Examining the seals on the doors she knew one was her godmother's and the other Lord and Lady Crocker's.

"It would seem Cole is going to be occupied if Miss Sally Crocker travelled with her parents," Samuel said, swinging off Tempest's back before he turned the reins over to a groom then marched over to where Brittany sat on her horse.

She smiled down at him and before she knew what happened he freed her left foot from its stirrup, grasped her by the waist and lowered her to the ground. Everything happened with such speed she didn't have a chance to breathe, not that once his hand had encircled her waist she had been able to.
