Chapter 17
Grace
Itâs a busy morning at work, and I barely have any time for my coffee. Mr. Hoffman kept me occupied in his office, but when he offered to have lunch together, I shook my head. Not because I found it indecent or strange, because I didnât, but simply because Iâd already brought a ready-made lunch in the form of Caesarâs salad, just in case I didnât get the chance to leave my desk again.
This time I did have enough time, but I felt a little lazy. I nestled into my cozy chair and opened the yellow lunchbox which Alisa packed for me. Sometimes, I think she pampers me too much, but thatâs what you get when you have awesome best friends. They take good care of you and your stomach.
I glance over at my coffee mug. About three hours ago, it smelled divine. Someone had ordered for the set-up of a new coffee machine, and the beverage it makes is absolutely divine. Only, this morning I did not get a chance to enjoy it while it was hot, and now that itâs cold, it serves little to no purpose.
So, instead, I focus on the salad. As always, Alisaâs skills in the kitchen are amazing. She always says itâs just an amateurish skill, but itâs enough to make anyoneâs mouth water.
When Iâm about half done with my salad, a guy walks over to my desk, carrying a cardboard box in his hands.
âAre you Grace Hensley?â he asks.
From his uniform, I could tell heâs a delivery man of sorts, although I canât tell who he works for.
âI have a package for you,â he tells me, while Iâm still trying to remember if maybe Alisa or I ordered something online, and then just forgot about it. It sounds doubtful, but so many things have happened in the last two weeks that I wouldnât put it past myself.
He puts the box on my desk, then extracts a pad and offers it to me to sign.
âDo I need to pay anything?â I wonder, hesitating to accept the pen.
âNo, itâs all been paid for,â he informs me, the pen still in his hand.
I sigh, accepting it, then scribbling my signature quickly. He nods quickly, wishes m a good day, and disappears, leaving me in the usual clamor of the big office.
I stare at the box, almost as if it were a bomb and the last thing I should do is touch it. But curiosity gets the best of me. Maybe I really did order something online, and now itâll be a surprise. Thatâs how you surprise yourself, you see. Genius.
I take a small pair of scissors and cut along the line of the dark brown scotch tape. My fingers tingle with anticipation as I open the upper cover. There is cushioning tissue paper inside, and itâs the first thing I see.
Then, I see it. Thereâs a box inside this box. Itâs smaller, expensive looking, ruby red with a satin white ribbon wrapped around it, tied in a bow.
