Chapter Eight

I knew I should have invited Ali to spend the night in my bed, but really I was still in shock knowing that my grandmother had been right all along. My mate was to be a non-shifter. The enemy as they were once known to my kind. I put my hands behind my head and watched the reflection the trees made on my bedroom ceiling as the moon shone brightly behind them.

I’d felt her fear but then she was calm when I’d approached her as my bear half. Her touch had been so gentle, so respectful for the creature that I was.

And making love to her…I knew the minute I plunged into her that she was mine. Did she feel the same connection? I knew it was hard for a non-shifter to grasp the whole mate concept. It’s not just about falling in love, but two hearts and minds that are destined to find one another and be together no matter what obstacles get in their way.

I turned onto my side. I never sleep much but tonight I just couldn’t drift off even for ten minutes. I was a bear in love, but my biggest fear was that Allison would not wish to take a werebear as her partner. I knew of a few couples who had already applied for a mate permit. So many hoops to jump through but maybe one day things would be different. Perhaps my children wouldn’t have to face the hatred and bias opinions.

My children. The ones I wanted with Ali.

I’d do anything to convince that I was her bear.
