âAt the Domino?â
âI work there.â
âIn the bar?â
âI deal blackjack.â
âOh yes of course.â
âWhatâs your name?â
âLayton. George M. Layton. Whatâs yours?â
âCall me Ethel.â
âWant to call me George?â
âI donât mind. George, I seen it all. I donât mean what they said happened. I donât mean what they done to fix it up and make it look like an accident. I mean I seen it. But donât get me wrong. I didnât come down here to make her feel bad or anything like that. Thatâs why that clerk made me so sore. I came down here for just the opposite. I came down here to let her know it was all right and she didnât have nothing to fear. I come down to let her know that so far as I was concerned that husband of hers was a heel. Youâd be that amazed, George, if you knew the propositions he made me, while I was dealing him blackjack not an hour before she shot him. Wanted me to drive back to his shack with him for a âsmall fun,â he kept calling it. Can you imagine that? Itâs not any of my business what was done. Just the same I do think she ought to make it worth my while. Donât you think thatâs only right?â
âI do indeed.â
âYouâd think sheâd want to do something like that.â
âI guarantee she wants to.â
âSo if you want to take me up thereââ
âNot so fast, not so fast. Taking you up there would be simple, some other time, but, as you can easily imagine, sheâs got her own reasons for not seeing anybody today, not even me. Donât worry though, itâll be handled. Does she know you saw it? Were you there?â
âIn the door thereâs a slot, with bars in front and a steel door behind. The door was open a little bit. I peeped in.â
âAnd you saw something, is that it?â
âI seen him killed.â
âBy her?â
âIf I told you that, youâd know as much as I do, wouldnât you? Suppose you do some talking now. And talk nice. About money.â
âTo spill it or skip it?â
âTo skip it, I would rather imagine.â
âSheâll be interested to hear that.â
âWhat do I do now?â
âLet me think. Whereâs Spiro?â
âOut at the Domino.â
âI think heâs the guy, not Shoreham.â
âI would have gone to him, but he and Tony are so thick all of a sudden I was afraid. I work for Tony and I didnât know how heâd take it.â
âIâm awfully glad you came here first. Now hereâs what you do. Have a buck off me and see yourself a nice picture. Around seven oâclock or so, come back here and wait to be paged. Donât go back to the Domino till you hear from me.â
