Chapter Four

“Who’s Katherine?” I asked him, not making the connection. On stage Kitty was singing and moving like a snake, I didn’t think it was humanly possible to be that sexy without being completely naked.

“Kitty is Katherine,” Preston told me, “Nate’s ex girlfriend.”

“My Kitty is Nate’s ex?” I exclaimed, “The one who dumped him?”

Nate turned to look at me with a sad look on his face. “I’m afraid I lied to you,” he said, “I broke up with her the minute I knew you were coming home. She was desperate to have a baby with me, and I couldn’t handle it. I only wanted you.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, still a little stunned at this revelation.

“I didn’t want you to think I was nuts,” he said, “and then by the time we were open with each other, it didn’t seem like a big deal.”

“It’s not a big deal,” I said looking up at Kitty on stage. Katherine, I corrected myself. “Then why did she latch onto me at work?”

“I told her there was somebody else,” Nate said, “She probably thought she could get information out of you.”

“Do you think she suspects something?” I asked, feeling more than a little exposed.

“She’s not that bright,” Preston leaned in and answered the question.

“She’s crafty, but I think she’s too self centered to ever pick up on those cues,” Nate agreed.

“Well, I guess we’ll just sit back and enjoy the show. It would be too suspicious if we left now, and I would hate her to think she’d upset any of us,” I said and held out my glass for more champagne.

“Good thinking,” Nate replied and filled his own glass after mine. We all toasted to crazy exes and finding each other now, and drank as we watched the dancers.

She was as sexy as hell, I’d give her that, but my hackles were way up after the revelation. She had a smug look on her face every time she looked over at our table, and she had dollar signs in her eyes every time she tried to get Nate’s attention.

The show ended about forty minutes later, we were polite and clapped along with everybody else, finished off our champagne and headed home as soon as we could escape.

I was grateful, even though I held it together and put on a strong front, I didn’t think I could handle her hanging off Nate, flirting with him and pretending to be my friend in order to get closer to him.

If anything, I felt like a kitty cat with my claws out when I thought about it.

We finally made our way to our new spot, the guest quarters at home, our bedroom. We’d all wanted our own space to be together, but it hadn’t felt right to take over the master suite after mom and dad had died, none of us wanted to do it. We’d removed their belongings and had them boxed up for storage, and were thinking we’d eventually sell the entire house once everything was settled financially.
