“You did what?” Paige screamed at me once she understood what I’d been saying.

“I signed myself off the inheritance,” I replied, looking at Preston, “otherwise we would have lost it.”

“But that means Preston is officially this baby’s father. I didn’t want that, Nate, I didn’t want to choose one of you over the other. It’s not fair,” she cried.

“Thank you, Nate,” Preston said and shook my hand, “That’s very good of you.”

“You’re welcome,” I replied, “I only did it so we didn’t lose the fortune. It doesn’t mean I won’t be part of the baby’s life or any less committed to this relationship. It just means that we will keep the money and the house and the company, and that baby will never want for a damn thing.”

Paige stopped pacing the kitchen and looked at me. “You really did this for us?” she asked incredulously.

“Yes,” I said and walked to stand beside her, “What did you think I did it for?”

“I worried that maybe you didn’t want to be with me anymore,” she said, her lower lip quivering, “I thought I wasn’t enough to keep you happy.”

“Oh babe,” I laughed and brushed her bangs out of her eyes, “you are more than I could ever hope for. Sharing you isn’t a problem, but having you worried definitely is.”

She melted into my arms and I held her as she calmed down. I looked over at Preston and he smiled, gave me the thumbs up sign, and left us alone.

Once Paige understood what I meant by my move, she relaxed and appreciated my sacrifice.

But like I said, it wasn’t exactly a sacrifice, but my soul felt balanced again and I felt good about my beautiful girl. I felt as though I had proven my worth to her, and she found me good enough to keep.
