Chapter 73
THE SMELL OF FRIED STEAK and onion and ripe plantains greeted me as I pushed open the door to Susieâs. My friends were already in deep conversation when I got to the table.
I bumped Claire down the banquette and ordered a beer.
âWhatâd I miss?â I asked.
âI wish to God you could have been in court today, Lindsay,â Yuki said, her face animated, truly alive for the first time since her mother had died. âGarza blew himself up,â she said. âSpectacularly.â
âI want to hear everything. Donât skip a word.â
Yuki had been drinking, for sure. She took me literally, impersonating both OâMara and Garza, repeating their words verbatim.
Cindy jumped in, the two overtalking each other, until Claire and I simply cracked up.
Cindy plowed ahead. âThing isâno, really, you guys! All he had to say was âNooooo. I had nothing to do with those patientsâ deaths.ââ
âInstead, he takes the Fifth!â said Yuki, slapping the table. She was glowering but elated. âWhat a jerk, stepping on his dick like that.â
âIf you ask me, his conscience made him do it,â Cindy added. âThe more I dig into Garzaâs past, the more I find out what kinda bum he is.â
âMore on that,â I said, holding up my empty glass. Loretta winked, returned with a refill. She also dropped laminated menus in front of us.
âFor instance,â said Cindy, âhe left several of his jobs under a dark cloud. Not exactly âYouâre fired,â but definitely âHereâs your hat. Thereâs the exit.â At least once, he ducked a sexual harassment suit.â
âWhy am I not surprised that Garzaâs a skirt hound?â Yuki said. âArrogant bastard. Totally in love with himself.â
Cindy nodded vigorously. âAnd more to the point, too many âaccidentsâ happened to his patients. If I hadnât heard about other cases like his, Iâd say it was unbelievable.â
âSee, this is what gives me the willies,â Claire said. âOnly about one out of ten hospital mistakes ever get reported. Most of the time the mistakes arenât fatalâso, no problem. The patient survives and goes home.
âBut even when patients die under totally hinky circumstances, people think doctors are so Godlike, they just accept whatever theyâre told. Iâve seen it happen.â
âNot me. I donât feel that way anymore,â said Yuki, her smile clouding over. It was like watching an eclipse of the moon. âI donât think Dennis Garza is a god. Quite the opposite. I know heâs e-vil!â
