A PHOTO SHOOT ON LOCATION

The next day, Liam picked up Luca at the studio in his green English Daimler.

It was one of those rare foggy mornings Melbourne offers, just to make you question even further the guesswork of the weatherman. The forecast was for sunshine, but in Melbourne anything goes, and usually on short notice. A fact which would normally offer a fair reason to justify the stress a Melbourne photographer lives under when working on location, with tentative, early morning weather checks to decide whether to go ahead or cancel the shoot, saving loads of money for the client on talent fees. But in this case Luca felt quite relaxed, the photos didn't require any specific lighting and whatever they might eventually lack could easily be fixed with digital retouching. In Luca's eyes, the word digital had marked the outbreak of a contagious disease, affecting all aspects of image creation from design to printing to photography. An all invading plague against which no remedy had yet been found.

He had embraced it reluctantly, like many of the old guard in his field, as a necessary pest that couldn't be avoided. But days like this made it easier to accept, with fewer headaches about choosing the right film or compensation filters for the variable light conditions.

Luca's digital gear got precision-packed into an old carrying case he had adapted for the purpose, with custom cut slots for camera and lenses and memory cards and batteries and wires and laptop, looking rather like a gadget designed by Q for James Bond.

Liam didn't seem particularly impressed by it, showing as much interest as Luca usually did for his fishing gear, more concerned about the little time left before meeting the architects in a cafe’ facing Princess Pier.

“I'll brief you in the car, it's getting late.”

“What about the threesome experience you promised to tell me about?”

“It'll have to wait… maybe during lunch. You are having lunch with me? You're not in a hurry to come back here, are you?”

Liam had shifted into leader's mode, second nature to him since having served for years in the Israeli Navy Seals, with the rank of lieutenant. He was then responsible for his men, for their preparation, readiness and safety, for getting into action on demand, quickly, effectively and successfully. Once dropped off by the choppers into the sea, under the cover of night, they had to hit their target with the precision of a Swiss clock, no room for uncertainties or doubts or mistakes.

An adrenaline rush which still took over his body any time he had to organise something, anything, even the most simple action. Efficiency of execution, timing, determination and stamina were all qualities he had developed in real life or death situations, which made anything he had to confront in his business activities child's play in comparison.

Qualities Lena got blown away by, she was so used to being responsible for everyone, the organiser of everything around her, from the most important life changing decision, to procuring tickets for the evening show.
