Chapter Three

Genevieve Loos lived in nearby La Habra Heights, an area that retained its rural character with multi-acre lots, meandering roads, horse stables and individualized homes that ranged from cottages to mansions.

In the February darkness, Emma had to backtrack several times along narrow streets, looking for signs half-hidden among bougainvillea and oleander hedges, before she found the winding driveway that led to Genevieve’s estate.

The house turned out to be an impressive mock-Tudor structure with a view over the lights of La Habra. Emma circled to the back, where she parked her compact next to a fiery Maserati that must belong to Alyssa.

From here, she could see steam rising from the lighted pool, but there was no one outdoors in the chilly night. Emma sat in her car for a moment, steeling her nerve.

Did everyone have a little voice within that, at times like these, muttered, “Who do you think you are?” Emma didn’t suppose so, Some people, like Alyssa Loos, appeared to possess endless self-confidence.

At twenty-three, Alyssa was already the veteran of five years on the hit charts. She’d won Grammy Awards for her vocals and songwriting, and had already stayed on top far longer than most singers. Five years in pop music was like two decades in any other field, Emma reflected.

And now she had the nerve to try to tell Alyssa that she needed to remake herself in order to tackle an acting career. Surely Alyssa already employed enough managers and agents to fashion whatever image suited her best.

Except that Emma could do something they couldn’t, something entirely instinctive. She could, assuming that she and Alyssa struck the right note, that she could get inside her client’s mind. She had a gift for taking account of the whole person and tailoring a style for her.

More than that, Emma really wanted Alyssa to succeed. Maybe, as her friends sometimes teased, it was her mothering instinct, but she cared whether a client made a hit at her dinner party or impressed a new suitor or simply felt better about herself.

Although Alyssa’s music was a bit strident for Emma’s taste, she admired the young woman’s originality and panache. Furthermore, she couldn’t help seeing Alyssa as Genevieve’s fiercely loved daughter.

She’s got to hire me, Emma decided as she emerged from the car and took a deep breath of cold air. For her sake as much as mine.

At the front door, Emma rang the bell. She wasn’t sure what she expected to find, although rumor had it that Genevieve and Alyssa occasionally had screaming, plate- throwing fights. It was hard for Emma to imagine her gracious client ever behaving that way, and certainly tonight she heard no sound but the crisp rustle of a chill wind in the trees.

The door opened and a maid in a black dress and white apron admitted her. The entrance hall arched upward for two stories, framing a gleaming circular staircase that could have come from a movie set. Emma’s pumps clicked sharply as she crossed the marble floor.
